Rose pink light guards for a fast food restaurant

One such instance in which MS Guardio were asked to meet a bespoke requirement was when we were contacted by a contractor working on behalf of a well known chain of Mexican fast food restaurants in Edinburgh. The customer required fluorescent light guards that were a specific shade of pink to match the décor in their restaurant.

Our guards are powder coated white as standard, however we are able to match most colour requirements for our customers. If you want to source guards in a specific colour or have a bespoke requirement contact our customer service team who will be happy to prepare a quote for you.

AIANO fluorescent light guards are the result of decades of experience in designing and manufacturing wire mesh guards. The AIANO Classic fluorescent light guard is strong, durable and aesthetically pleasing guard.

Aiano’s distinctive wire mesh fluorescent light guards with their signature v-ends are strong and attractive. The v-ends mean that the tube can often be replaced without having to remove the guard.

What our guards are made of

For this bespoke project the light guards were made with v-ends, from 1″ x 1″ x 12 gauge (25mm x 25mm x 2.64mm) steel weld mesh on a 5 gauge (5.38mm) steel rod frame. The guards were powder coated in rose pink finish (RAL3017). Our stock guards are supplied in white finish, however we can meet most bespoke requirements. We can supply guards coated in any colour and have supplied grey, silver and black in the past. However, rose pink light guards were a first.

If you have special requirements, do not hesitate to contact us for a quotation. We can make guards to all sizes and requirements. Please call us on 020 3603 4854 or email us if you would like to discuss your requirements, or require further information or advice on our wire guards.

  • Radiator Guard Options and additional health & safety features

MS Guardio offers a number of radiator guard options that are available via our bespoke service, which provide additional health & safety features or enhance the guards for particular needs and environments.

Control flap – safe access to your heater controls

To access a control panel on the heater, it is recommended that you buy a guard with a control flap. Aiano control flaps are securely fixed to the guard on welded hinges and lie flush with the surface of guard. The flap can be secured shut with a small padlock if you want to prevent access to the controls by non-authorised persons or children.

A control access flap is much safer option than having an opening in the guard, through which children and adults may still touch the heater.

If you want a control flap on your guard, it is essential to check the size and location of the controls on your heater.

All radiator guards with control flaps on the MS Guardio website have the size and position of the control flap optimised for Dimplex heater. If your heater has controls in a different location you may need to order a special guard from us via our bespoke service

    Sloping top radiator guards

In some environments, a radiator guard can appear as a tempting seat or shelf on which to place objects – a coat, books, a cup of coffee…. This can be dangerous and can interfere with the safe functioning of the guard. Objects placed on top of the guard can interfere with the heat circulation and cause the guard to get hot.

Sloping tops radiator guards prevent people sitting on or placing objects on the guard and are particularly useful in Schools and Libraries, to avoid compromising the function of the guard and prevent damage to books.

    Skirting cut-outs

Skirting cut-outs can be made to any size to ensure the heater guard fits snugly to the wall.

    Other radiator guard options

    Welded hooks

When the radiator guard will be used in an environment where the guard must be removed for some of the time to provide access to the heater, to facilitate cleaning or for some other reason, the guard can be fitted with welded hooks instead of welded lugs. Instead of screwing the guard to the wall, the guard can be lifted on and off of screw-eyes fixed to the wall.

    Welded feet

Welded feet or legs can be added to the bottom of storage heater guards to facilitate cleaning inside the guard.

    Pipe cut-outs

Sometimes additional cut-outs are needed to allow the guard to fit over pipes and obstructions, such as sockets or valves.

    Control sticks

If you need to access the heater controls but do not wish to have a control flap, control sticks can be supplied for adjusting the controls on Dimplex storage heaters or other heaters with similar controls.

    Half inch finger-safe mesh

If you need to ensure that fingers or other objects cannot be passed through the mesh radiator guards can be made with from mesh with a smaller aperture, typically 12 x 12mm ( ½” x ½” x 16swg).

    Heavy duty radiator guards

Heavy duty radiator guards are made from a combination of steel angle bar, flat bar and 25 x 25mm 12swg weld mesh.

If you would to request, discuss or receive a quotation for any of these radiator guard options for health & safety please contact us via our bespoke services with a brief description of your requirements and someone will contact you.

  • How to choose your radiator guard

At MS Guardio we pride ourselves in offering the widest range of wire mesh guard solutions for all your health & safety needs and much more.  We stock an extensive choice of guards to suit all the most popular radiator models and we continue to expand the list of supported models. This article offers some guidance on how to navigate our site to choose your radiator guard.

Selecting your radiator guard by radiator make and model

The easiest way to choose your radiator guard is if you know your radiator make and model.

If you know your heater make and model you can enter it in the search box.

For example, if you have a Dimplex XLS24 storage heater, just enter XLS24 in the search box and this will bring you to a results page which displays the SH24 storage heater guard designed by AIANO for the Dimplex XLS24 and equivalent-sized models by other manufacturers. The product description for the SH24 shows clearly that this guard is suitable for the Dimplex XLS24. On the page called Additional Information, you can see the dimensions and full specification of the guard.

You can also use the left navigation bar to choose your radiator guard.

The most popular Dimplex and Creda models are listed in the left-side navigation bar under SUITS HEATER MODEL. They are ordered, clickable and will enable you to navigate straight to the correct guard product.

Another category included in the left-hand bar to help narrow your choice and find your guard swiftly is HEATER MAKE. HEATER MAKE refers to the heater manufacturer, e.g., Dimplex, Creda, and so on.

Selecting your radiator guard by radiator type and size

Another way to choose your radiator guard correctly is if you know the type and size of your radiator.

If your heater is a panel heater or convector heater and you know the size

You can navigate to Heater Guards — Panel Heater Guards and then look under HEATER SIZE in the left-hand navigation bar for your correct heater. They are ordered, clickable and will enable you to navigate straight to the correct guard product.

If your heater is a storage heater and you know the size

You can navigate to Heater Guards — Storage Heater Guards and then look under HEATER SIZE in the left-hand navigation bar for your correct heater. They are ordered, clickable and will enable you to navigate straight to the correct guard product.

The same process can be followed for Quartz Heaters by navigating to Heater Guards — Quartz Heater Guards.

If you know the correct type and size of guard you need

You can also navigate to either Storage Heater guards, Panel Heater Guards or Quartz Heater Guards, as described above and then look under GUARD SIZE to identify a suitable guard very quickly.

For example, if you need storage heater guard with the dimensions w1166 x h775 x d258mm, by navigating RADIATOR GUARDS — STORAGE HEATER GUARDS you can look under GUARD SIZE in the left navigation pane, to see the list of standard guard sizes available in this category of radiator.

One of the guard sizes listed is w1168 x h787 x d254mm, which is an AIANO SH24 storage heater guard. By clicking on the selected size you will come to the search result page from where you can go to the product page for this guard and find the full specification of this guard including size and heater models supported.

Selecting the right size guard for your radiator

To choose your radiator guard there are a number of health & safety factors to consider. It is important to purchase the right sized guard for your heater otherwise the guard will not function properly and may create a health and safety risk instead of offering protection.

As a rule of thumb, you should add 75mm to each side of your heater to identify the guard size. We recommend you read through our guidance notes How to calculate your radiator guard size before selecting your guard.

    Bespoke requirements

MS Guardio offers a wide selection of standard guards that we keep in stock for many of the most popular radiators and we are expanding this range all the time. But if you cannot find the correct radiator guard on our site, or if you have special requirements, for example, skirting boards, heating pipes, restricted spaces from alcoves or window sills, send us your requirements and we will contact you with a quote.

  • How to calculate radiator guard size correctly

You may not have access to information about the model of your heater. Or perhaps, your heater is an older model that differs in size from its newer cousins.  In such cases, you can determine the guard you need by calculating the shape and size of your radiator guard. This article outlines how to calculate radiator guard size in three easy steps.

Step 1 – Knowing your guard shape

How to calculate radiator guard size correctly for a panel heater  How to calculate radiator guard size correctly for a storage heater

From left:  (1) 5-sided wall mounted guard to suit a panel heater (2) 4-sided floor-standing guard to suit a storage heater.

From the perspective of choosing a radiator guard, there are two main types of heater:

    Floor-standing heater

    • A floor-standing heater is a heater that is fixed to the wall but standing on the floor, for example, a storage heater.
    • A floor-standing heater needs a guard with four sides – a front, top and two sides. There is not bottom on this guard because it will be standing on the floor.

    A wall-mounted heater

    • A wall-mounted heater is fixed to the wall but raised off the floor, such as a panel heater.
    • A wall-mounted heater needs a guard with five sides – a front, top and bottom, and two sides.

Step 2 – Measuring your radiator

Next you will need to check the key dimensions of your radiator. You should measure the width, height and depth of your heater.

    • If your heater is a floor-standing heater, be sure to measure the distance from the top of the heater to the floor.
    • When measuring the depth of your heater, be sure to measure from the wall to the front of the heater, in case there is a gap between the heater and the wall.

Step 3 – Calculate radiator guard size

Next, you will need to calculate radiator guard size by adding the correct clearance to the dimensions of your heater.

Wire mesh guards should have enough clearance to be finger-safe.

For the guard to function correctly there must be a safe clearance between the heater and the guard. The guard manufacturer, Aiano, recommends this clearance should be not less than 75mm, (3 inches).

    • For a floor-standing guard, this means the guard should be 150mm wider, 75mm taller and 75mm deeper than the heater.
    • For a wall-mounted guard, this means the guard should be 150mm wider, 150mm taller and 75mm deeper than the heater.

Using the recommended clearance will ensure that the guard is finger-safe, in other words, if adults or children put their fingers through the mesh they will still not be able to touch the heater. It will also reduce the risk of the guard itself becoming too hot.
