    The storage heater concept

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.7.7″ _module_preset=”default”]

The storage heater concept dates back to the 1960s, when the UK’s industrial requirements ensured that there was a steady demand for electricity across the 24-hour cycle.

As levels of industrial activity reduced and electricity supply became more weighted toward domestic consumers, suppliers ended up producing surplus power in the night and instating tariffs (Economy 7) that provided cheaper rates at these times of lower demand.

To take advantage of this, storage heaters were invented that consume energy by night and store the heat in an insulated core for the following day. For this type of heater, it is important to locate the heater well and to ensure that the customer is on the right tariff.

One major problem with the traditional storage heater models is that they leak heat at a steady rate. By evening time (when people generally want to turn the heating on) there is often little remaining stored heat available, and the heater then needs to draw energy from the grid.

The Quantum heater is designed with the elderly in mind. MS Guardio has written recently about safety around heaters for care homes

    [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” max_width=”2560px” collapsed=”off”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_text admin_label=”Sub-heading: Quantum heater smart technology” _builder_version=”4.9.0″ _module_preset=”default”]

    Dimplex Quantum heater smart technology

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.0″ _module_preset=”default”]

The revolutionary design of the Dimplex Quantum heater smart technology solves this problem by incorporating refined insulation that now includes aerogel and a completely redesigned heat brick for maximally efficient energy storage.

The fan that circulates the heat from the brick to the room space has also been improved by making the fan considerably larger than the fans in older models. This allows it to run at a slower speed, which provides efficiency gains as well as cutting down on the amount of noise the unit produces.

The heater features smart technology; it is capable of monitoring weather forecasts and preparing in advance for the anticipated temperature by storing more heat in the night before an expected colder day.

The Quantum heater smart technology also uses self-learning algorithms that monitor the consumer’s lifestyle patterns and preferences to provide the highest level of comfort and efficiency.

Alternatively, the Quantum iQ controller coupled to a digital LCD display enables heating requirements to be pre-set by the user over a seven-day period, and there is also the ability to switch between different profiles (such as a ‘holiday mode’) as required.

The system also incorporates adaptive start technology and open window sensing, making the heaters fully EcoDesign Lot 20 compliant. Heater models ending in RF can be wirelessly controlled via a smartphone/tablet app called Dimplex Control when paired with the Dimplex Hub.

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Sub-heading: Advantages of the Quantum heater” _builder_version=”4.9.0″ _module_preset=”default”]

Advantages of Dimplex Quantum heater smart technology

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.0″ _module_preset=”default”]

Dimplex Quantum heater smart technology is designed with the elderly in mind. The digital display is clear and simple to use, and the rotary controls are large and tactile, without the fiddly and often stiff knobs that plague older models. The heater is also built to be aesthetically pleasing and unobtrusive. The compact and slimline design means that a lot of floor space can be saved too.

Studies have shown that the customer can expect to see significant savings of up to 47% compared to an electric convector or radiator system and up to 27% compared to a standard storage heater system[1] when used in conjunction with the Economy 7 tariff. Up to 90% of the average daily energy consumption can be provided through overnight charging, and all additional heating requirements are pulled directly from the power grid to meet demand.

The storage technology can adapt to future developments in energy supply. For instance, if the Economy 7 tariff is discontinued in favour of a more flexible hourly rate tariff, the heater can shift to storing energy during times of the day when electricity is at its cheapest.

Dimplex Quantum heater smart technology are the best option for large institutions such as care homes and schools that are off the gas grid and are looking to make serious energy savings. To get the most benefit from these heaters, it is important to plan your heating strategy efficiently to take the best advantage of the heat storage technology.

The heaters are also the perfect choice for upgrading electric heating systems and are expressly designed to cover the fixing marks of most similarly sized heaters. There are five heater models available, with ascending output ratings of 500, 700, 1000, 1250 and 1500 Watts, corresponding to room sizes of 4, 5, 8, 9 and 11 square metres[2].

Despite the risks posed to UK homes, 85% of us still operate on Gas Central Heating. Is this wise? Is it safe? Are there really no reliable alternatives to gas heating?

At around 5:45am on 16th May 1968, Ivy Hodge went to the kitchen to make herself a cup of tea. She lit a match to light the gas stove. And next, as she recounted to reporters: ‘I found myself on the floor’.

The match Ivy lit sparked a gas explosion. It caused the partial collapse of Ronan Point, a newly built tower block in East London. It was 22 storeys high.

Thus, Ivy’s basic desire for a cup of tea prompted a chain of events that left four dead and 17 injured. But what if there had been a safer alternative to gas heating?

Naturally, the tragedy of Ronan Point compelled the public’s attention to the dangers of gas. Yet, five decades later, just carbon monoxide alone is estimated to kill 30 people and injure 250 annually. Experts say that this figure may be underestimated. Especially amongst the elderly, whose symptoms of poisoning may be mischaracterised as ‘old age’. Furthermore, fuel poverty may cause people to rely on gas, making it hard for eldery people and care homes to consider replacing existing systems.

The safe and reliable alternative to gas heating

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.7.7″ _module_preset=”default”]

Does electric heating represent a safe alternative to gas heating? Today’s electric radiators are sleek and compact. They are built in with the latest smart technologies. Featuring LED screens and Wi-Fi controls, their development has been encouraged by the ubiquity of modern technology. And such elegance and functionality on a heater has never been more affordable, let alone in existence.

Thus, modern technology has touched the heating industry to produce a new kind of heater.

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Sub-heading: Did you know?” _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default”]

    Did you know?

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default”]Electric radiators have evolved far beyond the dated and clunky storage heaters you might first associate with electric heating. It’s a wonder their development began in the 19th century. Indeed, early prototypes featured long, cylindrical light bulbs with elaborate fittings.
    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Sub-heading: So why electric radiators?” _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default”]

    So why electric radiators?

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default”]The most distinguishing benefit of electric heating is that every single Watt of energy is transferred into heat. In contrast, gas and oil heaters lose energy during the combustion process.[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Sub-heading: So how do electric heaters work?” _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default”]

So how do electric heaters work?

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default”]Electric radiators work by both heating the surrounding air and radiating heat.

You may have noticed that convection heaters lose their heat to draughts. Well, with electric radiators, that additional radiated heat would ensure your home is kept reliably cosy with safe thermal energy.

Accordingly, electric radiators are a more efficient alternative to gas heating.

    What are the electric options?

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.7.7″ _module_preset=”default”]

One glance at an electrical radiator provider showcases the variety of options on offer.

For instance, take Dimplex, a trusted brand and the world’s largest electrical heating business. Take their new Quantum Series electric heaters. This model employs an algorithm to interpret not only your climate conditions, but your lifestyle pattern. With seemingly intuitive technology, the radiator adapts to store the right amount of low cost, off-peak electricity. And with the added flexibility of a ‘boost’ when required.

Our partner, C. Aiano and Sons, developed a special range of heater guards for the Quantum heaters, in cooperation with Dimplex. Aiano wire mesh radiator guards are the only radiator guards to feature on the Dimplex website. The Aiano Classic range of guards for Dimplex Quantum heaters can be purchase here on the MS Guardio website. MS Guardio recently published an overview of the Dimplex Quantum heater technology.

Electric radiators are a smart alternative to gas heating.

Compared to gas and temperamental oil heaters, recent electric radiators have been able to offer peace of mind. Of course, the intelligence to adapt to your specific needs goes a long way, not to mention their awesome features.

But importantly, they can be affixed to a wall or floor-standing and portable. In addition, different models may have a specific feature that is just right for you. Whichever is one’s preferred choice, there is probably a model that is perfect for you.

    Care homes

The health and safety of elderly residents is paramount. Certainly, this has been brought home by the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, care homes frequently take on additional space heaters. Especially when there are sudden, cold snaps.

But the British Fire and Rescue Services estimate there are 100 casualties a year due to fires from heating appliances. They pinpoint the dangers of gas leakages and the risk of changing cylinders and cartilages.

Using portable heaters of any kind in a care home is non-advisable. But if you do plan to use a space heater in a supervised area, consider electric heaters. The Studio G Tower Ceramic Fan Heater offers ease of function and safety to vulnerable or elderly users. It even employs friendly technologies such as Auto Shut Off and Electronic Climate Control!

So are electric radiators a safe alternative to gas heating?

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.7.7″ _module_preset=”default”]

Electric heating is definitely an efficient and safe alternative to gas heating. The more intriguing question is, how much smarter will they get?

  • New gen Dimplex Quantum: Ultra-modern storage heaters

The new-gen Dimplex Quantum heaters are slim and sleek. Dimplex describes them as ‘the most advanced, economical, off-peak electric heater on the market’. Clearly, electric heating has come a long way from their origins in the 19th century as long, cylindrical light bulbs. In fact, Dimplex has a history of making cutting-edge storage heaters. MS Guardio supplies wire mesh guards for all Dimplex heaters.

In the early 1960s, electric energy was modern and fashionable. Electricity companies generated lots of power to meet this new demand. However, they were met with a big issue: how to make use of their power stations overnight. This was the most efficient way to make use of them. But who would use energy at this time?

Dimplex was one of the first manufacturers to come up with a solution: ultra-modern storage heaters.

In general terms, storage heaters have changed little in principle since that 1961 model. During the night, storage heaters store up electricity in clay or ceramic bricks. The heater then draws upon this heat in the daytime when required. Because they use electricity during the seven ‘cheapest’ hours (on the ‘Economy 7’ tariff), storage heaters can be very economical.

Why then, in the last 60 years, has storage heating not become the standard choice?

Units were bulky, heavy, and aesthetically unappealing. Heaters could be inefficient and leak heat, meaning you could run out of heat by the time you needed it. You would need to resort to using expensive daytime energy. For these reasons, storage heaters have taken a hit to their reputation. However, these misgivings are outdated, so before you write them off, consider the new-generation Dimplex Quantum product range.

    [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” max_width=”2560px”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_text admin_label=”Heading: Dimplex Quantum Heaters” _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default”]

    Dimplex Quantum Heaters

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default”]So how impressive really is the new-gen Dimplex Quantum heater? Already, these heaters resolve the two major faults of storage heating: they are ergonomic and efficient. The Dimplex Quantum fan is rather large, meaning it can run at half the speed to do its job. Old storage heaters infamously make irritating noises. Dimplex has also resolved the issue of leaky heat with new refined insulation at the core of their heaters. Their design includes aerogel — a state-of-the-art insulator to reduce energy loss — and redesigned thermal bricks.

But what else can they do?

Modern storage heaters with the most modern technology

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default”]

New-generation Quantum heaters are spaceships compared to their clunky predecessors. They feature a 7-day programmable timer, as well as out-all-day and home-all-day settings. They adapt intuitively to suit your lifestyle and learn to adjust their temperature over the day to match your preferences. More than this, they can monitor weather forecasts, preparing itself — and you — for an upcoming cold snap.

The boost: Unlike older models, you have the flexibility of a ‘boost’ for moments you crave a blast of warmth. By utilising the heater’s technology, you can be more efficient with your heat. And efficiency means savings!

These modern storage heaters are a great choice for senior citizens. Dimplex designed these models for ease of use, and especially for arthritic or less mobile users. The digital control panel has audio feedback and no fiddly knobs or buttons. Clever bonuses like open-window detection prevent heat energy (and money) from rushing out the window. The Quantum also comes with a pin-lock — a handy function when put in a house with small children. Or for more managerial control in a residential home with multiple occupants.

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″]

Fuel poverty is a very real issue in the UK. A government-conducted survey in 2017 estimated that there were at least 2.53 million fuel-poor homes in England. This is particularly worrying for the elderly, as it is estimated that 80 die every winter due to fuel poverty.

One benefit of choosing modern storage heaters is that they keep you warm without wasting too much money and energy. Quantum heaters are not cheap. They will set you back around £500 to £800. However, they do promise to save you money in the long run. Dimplex estimates:

    • 90% of your heating requirement can be met with low-cost energy
    • a modern storage heater can save you up to 27% compared to standard storage heaters
    • replacing electric radiators or heaters with modern storage heaters can slash your bill by up to 47%.

This is because the new gen Dimplex Quantum heater uses a low energy tariff. And by taking advantage of the technology, you become savvy with your energy use. Thus, the heater helps you use only the exact amount you need. Good for your pocket, good for the planet.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Subheading: Customise your Quantum heater with a wire mesh guard for peace of mind” _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default”]

But it’s not just bills vulnerable users need to consider when choosing a heater. The Health and Safety Executive warns care homes that close contact with surfaces above 43C can lead to serious burns. Children are also at high risk of burns. It is estimated that 21% of burns suffered by children aged 0-15 result from contact heat, like hot radiator surfaces. Luckily, C. Aiano & Sons have developed with Dimplex specialised Quantum wire mesh heater guards. These would suit the new gen Dimplex Quantum heaters, perfect for certain environments where protection is key. • Radiator Guard Options and additional health & safety features

MS Guardio offers a number of radiator guard options that are available via our bespoke service, which provide additional health & safety features or enhance the guards for particular needs and environments.

Control flap – safe access to your heater controls

To access a control panel on the heater, it is recommended that you buy a guard with a control flap. Aiano control flaps are securely fixed to the guard on welded hinges and lie flush with the surface of guard. The flap can be secured shut with a small padlock if you want to prevent access to the controls by non-authorised persons or children.

A control access flap is much safer option than having an opening in the guard, through which children and adults may still touch the heater.

If you want a control flap on your guard, it is essential to check the size and location of the controls on your heater.

All radiator guards with control flaps on the MS Guardio website have the size and position of the control flap optimised for Dimplex heater. If your heater has controls in a different location you may need to order a special guard from us via our bespoke service

    Sloping top radiator guards

In some environments, a radiator guard can appear as a tempting seat or shelf on which to place objects – a coat, books, a cup of coffee…. This can be dangerous and can interfere with the safe functioning of the guard. Objects placed on top of the guard can interfere with the heat circulation and cause the guard to get hot.

Sloping tops radiator guards prevent people sitting on or placing objects on the guard and are particularly useful in Schools and Libraries, to avoid compromising the function of the guard and prevent damage to books.

    Skirting cut-outs

Skirting cut-outs can be made to any size to ensure the heater guard fits snugly to the wall.

    Other radiator guard options

    Welded hooks

When the radiator guard will be used in an environment where the guard must be removed for some of the time to provide access to the heater, to facilitate cleaning or for some other reason, the guard can be fitted with welded hooks instead of welded lugs. Instead of screwing the guard to the wall, the guard can be lifted on and off of screw-eyes fixed to the wall.

    Welded feet

Welded feet or legs can be added to the bottom of storage heater guards to facilitate cleaning inside the guard.

    Pipe cut-outs

Sometimes additional cut-outs are needed to allow the guard to fit over pipes and obstructions, such as sockets or valves.

    Control sticks

If you need to access the heater controls but do not wish to have a control flap, control sticks can be supplied for adjusting the controls on Dimplex storage heaters or other heaters with similar controls.

    Half inch finger-safe mesh

If you need to ensure that fingers or other objects cannot be passed through the mesh radiator guards can be made with from mesh with a smaller aperture, typically 12 x 12mm ( ½” x ½” x 16swg).

    Heavy duty radiator guards

Heavy duty radiator guards are made from a combination of steel angle bar, flat bar and 25 x 25mm 12swg weld mesh.

If you would to request, discuss or receive a quotation for any of these radiator guard options for health & safety please contact us via our bespoke services with a brief description of your requirements and someone will contact you.

  • How to choose your radiator guard

At MS Guardio we pride ourselves in offering the widest range of wire mesh guard solutions for all your health & safety needs and much more.  We stock an extensive choice of guards to suit all the most popular radiator models and we continue to expand the list of supported models. This article offers some guidance on how to navigate our site to choose your radiator guard.

Selecting your radiator guard by radiator make and model

The easiest way to choose your radiator guard is if you know your radiator make and model.

If you know your heater make and model you can enter it in the search box.

For example, if you have a Dimplex XLS24 storage heater, just enter XLS24 in the search box and this will bring you to a results page which displays the SH24 storage heater guard designed by AIANO for the Dimplex XLS24 and equivalent-sized models by other manufacturers. The product description for the SH24 shows clearly that this guard is suitable for the Dimplex XLS24. On the page called Additional Information, you can see the dimensions and full specification of the guard.

You can also use the left navigation bar to choose your radiator guard.

The most popular Dimplex and Creda models are listed in the left-side navigation bar under SUITS HEATER MODEL. They are ordered, clickable and will enable you to navigate straight to the correct guard product.

Another category included in the left-hand bar to help narrow your choice and find your guard swiftly is HEATER MAKE. HEATER MAKE refers to the heater manufacturer, e.g., Dimplex, Creda, and so on.

Selecting your radiator guard by radiator type and size

Another way to choose your radiator guard correctly is if you know the type and size of your radiator.

If your heater is a panel heater or convector heater and you know the size

You can navigate to Heater Guards — Panel Heater Guards and then look under HEATER SIZE in the left-hand navigation bar for your correct heater. They are ordered, clickable and will enable you to navigate straight to the correct guard product.

If your heater is a storage heater and you know the size

You can navigate to Heater Guards — Storage Heater Guards and then look under HEATER SIZE in the left-hand navigation bar for your correct heater. They are ordered, clickable and will enable you to navigate straight to the correct guard product.

The same process can be followed for Quartz Heaters by navigating to Heater Guards — Quartz Heater Guards.

If you know the correct type and size of guard you need

You can also navigate to either Storage Heater guards, Panel Heater Guards or Quartz Heater Guards, as described above and then look under GUARD SIZE to identify a suitable guard very quickly.

For example, if you need storage heater guard with the dimensions w1166 x h775 x d258mm, by navigating RADIATOR GUARDS — STORAGE HEATER GUARDS you can look under GUARD SIZE in the left navigation pane, to see the list of standard guard sizes available in this category of radiator.

One of the guard sizes listed is w1168 x h787 x d254mm, which is an AIANO SH24 storage heater guard. By clicking on the selected size you will come to the search result page from where you can go to the product page for this guard and find the full specification of this guard including size and heater models supported.

Selecting the right size guard for your radiator

To choose your radiator guard there are a number of health & safety factors to consider. It is important to purchase the right sized guard for your heater otherwise the guard will not function properly and may create a health and safety risk instead of offering protection.

As a rule of thumb, you should add 75mm to each side of your heater to identify the guard size. We recommend you read through our guidance notes How to calculate your radiator guard size before selecting your guard.

    Bespoke requirements

MS Guardio offers a wide selection of standard guards that we keep in stock for many of the most popular radiators and we are expanding this range all the time. But if you cannot find the correct radiator guard on our site, or if you have special requirements, for example, skirting boards, heating pipes, restricted spaces from alcoves or window sills, send us your requirements and we will contact you with a quote.

  • How to calculate radiator guard size correctly

You may not have access to information about the model of your heater. Or perhaps, your heater is an older model that differs in size from its newer cousins.  In such cases, you can determine the guard you need by calculating the shape and size of your radiator guard. This article outlines how to calculate radiator guard size in three easy steps.

Step 1 – Knowing your guard shape

How to calculate radiator guard size correctly for a panel heater  How to calculate radiator guard size correctly for a storage heater

From left:  (1) 5-sided wall mounted guard to suit a panel heater (2) 4-sided floor-standing guard to suit a storage heater.

From the perspective of choosing a radiator guard, there are two main types of heater:

    Floor-standing heater

    • A floor-standing heater is a heater that is fixed to the wall but standing on the floor, for example, a storage heater.
    • A floor-standing heater needs a guard with four sides – a front, top and two sides. There is not bottom on this guard because it will be standing on the floor.

    A wall-mounted heater

    • A wall-mounted heater is fixed to the wall but raised off the floor, such as a panel heater.
    • A wall-mounted heater needs a guard with five sides – a front, top and bottom, and two sides.

Step 2 – Measuring your radiator

Next you will need to check the key dimensions of your radiator. You should measure the width, height and depth of your heater.

    • If your heater is a floor-standing heater, be sure to measure the distance from the top of the heater to the floor.
    • When measuring the depth of your heater, be sure to measure from the wall to the front of the heater, in case there is a gap between the heater and the wall.

Step 3 – Calculate radiator guard size

Next, you will need to calculate radiator guard size by adding the correct clearance to the dimensions of your heater.

Wire mesh guards should have enough clearance to be finger-safe.

For the guard to function correctly there must be a safe clearance between the heater and the guard. The guard manufacturer, Aiano, recommends this clearance should be not less than 75mm, (3 inches).

    • For a floor-standing guard, this means the guard should be 150mm wider, 75mm taller and 75mm deeper than the heater.
    • For a wall-mounted guard, this means the guard should be 150mm wider, 150mm taller and 75mm deeper than the heater.

Using the recommended clearance will ensure that the guard is finger-safe, in other words, if adults or children put their fingers through the mesh they will still not be able to touch the heater. It will also reduce the risk of the guard itself becoming too hot.

Find your guard or contact us for advice.

Once you have identified the shape and size of radiator guard you can search for the correct guard on msguardio.com.
