“There is ancient charm for curing the tertian agues with yarrow. A leaf of it is to be pulled offwith the left hand, pronouncing at the same time the sick man’s name; and this leaft is to be taken.”

But the warrior yarrow has hidden secrets and depths. Steeped in mythology, the scientific name for yarrow is achillea millefolium. A nod to the great warrior Achilles in Greek mythology who used this fantastic plant to tend to his soldiers’ wounds.

The ancient Romans knew this plant as Herba Militaris and also used it in battle to stop bleeding sustained injuries from ferocious fighting. In more recent history it has been known as soldiers woundwort.

The warrior yarrow then, is surely a mighty garden flower warrior whose applications are more than worthy of exploring further.

Amazing healing properties of warrior yarrow

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.7″ _module_preset=”default”]Our warrior yarrow has amazing anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties both essential for healing. Its healing properties include:

    • treatment of wounds,
    • bleeding,
    • headache,
    • inflammation,
    • pain,
    • spasmodic diseases,
    • flatulence and dyspepsia

Some of these effects may be due to a broad range of secondary active metabolites including flavonoids, phenolic acids, coumarins, terpenoids (monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, diterpenes, triterpenes) and sterols. But little research has yet  been done into the medicinal properties and benefits of yarrow.

We know that for quite some time the warrior yarrow herb has been used to quickly stop blood flow and promote the healing of wounds. A simple remedy is to simply crush or chew the leaves and apply directly to the affected area. You can also treat nosebleeds by crushing and rolling up a few leaves and inserting into the nostril. Once the bleeding has stopped the plug can be gently removed.

Chewing the leaves has also been associated with relieving toothache. Yarrow tea has many fantastic applications. The antibacterial properties of this warrior plant can be used to alleviate the symptoms of UTI’s and also bring down a fever.

It is also an amazingly effective way of regulating the menstrual cycle and therefore reducing cramps and complaints like heavy, painful flow. It is also extremely beneficial for reducing the effects of stomach ulcers and reduces inflammation in this area, also reducing indigestion and heartburn. Take the tea 1-3 times a day to really feel the benefit.

The application of warrior yarrow to the skin can help with reducing inflammation and bring down redness such as seen in Rosacea. Why not have a go at making your own yarrow soap and experience its soothing effect

Due to its anti-inflammatory properties yarrow essential oil, although maybe not your first go to oil, is a fantastic aid to the relief of coughs and colds when added to an oil burner. Why not add a few drops to a warm bath if you are feeling a little run down, the yarrow essential oil will soothe away muscular aches too.

Let’s not have any worries that the seeds may not germinate. Yarrow seeds can be difficult, and we don’t want any disappointment coming our way!

When deciding where to plant your young warrior yarrow, be cautious and considerate in your decision. Its sad to say but it is often classed as a weed.
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” max_width=”2560px”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.7″ _module_preset=”default”]You can find many cultivars of yarrow in garden centres in a wonderful range of colours but these are not usually used for medicinal purposes. Achillea millefolium is usually white or pale yellow.

Warrior yarrow battles and fights and wins on many occasions to be the most prolific plant in the garden.

It will take over, so one suggestion is to plant in a pot and bury this into your border. Or just keep it very contained in a large pot on your patio or lawn. If left unchecked, it can spread very rapidly and its seeds can be carried on the wind and self germinate so keep your eye on that warrior!

The warrior yarrow loves to be in full sun and moist but well drained soil. It’s an incredibly self-sufficient plant and needs little attention unless the soil becomes a bit too dry, in which case it will need a good glug of water.

It should give you a beautiful display from June to about August and maybe, if you’re lucky, into October. It is recommended to harvest a good bunch of yarrow on a sunny day. The sunshine helps to promote the production of essential oils in the plant and you can be sure to capture this. Then simply lay out in a cool dark place to dry. You can then store in an airtight container for culinary or medicinal use.

If you love to grow herbs or gorgeously aromatic plants, pop a pot or two of yarrow next to them. This fantastic plant will actively help them increase the production of essential oils. How fantastic that yarrow enhances and promotes the abundance of other plants in your garden or on your patio.

You can also add chopped leaves to compost to enrich the soil and add nutrients to your borders and pots. It truly is a heroic warrior!

In the kitchen with warrior yarrow

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.7″ _module_preset=”default”]Once summer hits, and those long heady days are upon us, why not escape to the peace and tranquillity of the countryside and try your hand at foraging for our plant warrior. Take your time and find mindfulness in this simple pleasure.

Our warrior yarrow looks remarkably similar to other varieties of plants. An easy way to tell you have yarrow in front of you is by its leaves, they are feathery and abundant, and something akin to the fern. Indeed, the species name is millefolium which means thousands of leaves.

As the day starts to turn into evening, head back to your kitchen to test your culinary skills with your plant haul.

Yarrow is perhaps best used as a herb to compliment your dishes. It has a bittersweet taste and could potentially overpower any other flavours. Less is more with this Warrior!!

Even though a little naughty, why not try your hand at making yarrow salt. Easy and simple to make, just crush the buds of the flower and mix with sea salt. Lay out on baking paper and dry for a couple of days. Use your yarrow salt for an interesting twist on your favourite dishes.

Dried yarrow is a great alternative to tarragon and by adding a little in stews and casseroles will add a ‘pop’ to those age old recipes handed down through the generations.

The classic salad is always a winner in summer but can become a little staid. Fear not! Let’s get adventurous and make a warrior yarrow salad, again a simple recipe that is sure to surprise and leaves you with more time to spend eating and socialising and less time slaving in the kitchen!

Thoroughly wash and roughly chop a good amount of yarrow and place in your favourite large salad bowl. Mix breadcrumbs with an egg and stir-fry until it is crumbly and golden. Crumble over the yarrow leaves and drizzle a small amount of balsamic vinegar and olive oil over the top.

Tea is always a good idea, no matter what time of the day, who doesn’t feel comforted and nourished by a warming cuppa. Yarrow tea is no exception and has many fantastic benefits, including helping to sooth digestive problems and calming anxiety and depression. You can buy yarrow tea from many health food shops but if you have some dried flowers to hand, all you need to do is roughly chop and steep in a teapot, strain then pour. Incredibly simple, incredibly effective.

The properties of ginger are manifold. Ginger is a valued spice adding fresh and peppery flavour to food, but above all it is a medicinal plant with strong antiviral properties.

The precise origins of ginger are not certain but it is likely to have come from India and Southern Asia where its lush green leaves and flowers of every possible colour adorn the tropical rainforests.

The rich properties of ginger mean that it has been used as medicinal food for centuries to prevent and cure disease and boost longevity. The Chinese philosopher Confucius (551-479 BC) apparently consumed ginger root with every meal and stories of the spice medicinal properties soon spread throughout the world.

When the Black Death pandemic hit the shores of England, Henry VIII recommended ginger as an effective treatment against the Ebola-like virus.

Unfortunately in 16th century, a pound of ginger cost as much as a sheep, and only the wealthy were able to afford it!

MS Guardio is writing a series of short articles about the healing properties some plants, flowers and foods at this time of pandemic and national crisis.

Ginger is probably best known for its antiemetic properties. It is useful as a traditional remedy for motion sickness.

Ginger tea can help reduce episodes of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. It may help with uterine cramping, although we do not know of any studies that have specifically researched uterine cramping arising during pregnancy.

Ginger is also beneficial for those undergoing chemotherapy treatment and a 2020 UK-based study looked at ginger and its effects on chemotherapy related nausea in breast cancer patients. The research concluded that ginger was particularly effective in the acute phase of chemotherapy.

A study by University of Miami concluded that ginger has the potential to be a substitute for standard non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) commonly prescribed for pain and inflammation so common in any form of arthritis.

A recent review of research into anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of ginger further confirm that ginger is effective in the treatment of swelling and reduced the chronic inflammation levels in the affected joints of the patients.

    Antiviral properties of ginger

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.9.4″ _module_preset=”default”]

Henry VIII might have been right after all advocating ginger as treatment for the Black Death since one of the most impressive medicinal benefits of ginger are its antiviral properties.

The current COVID-19 pandemic has focused the attention of researchers on natural compounds with antiviral potential.

Currently there is no scientific evidence to show that ginger can prevent or cure COVID-19 nor that it can destroy this particular coronavirus. But there is little doubt that the compounds in ginger can interfere with the replication of viruses.

Traditionally ginger has been taken to alleviate the symptoms of common cold and flu. A study looking at common respiratory infections has shown that ginger, and in particular fresh ginger can stimulate cells to fight the virus by blocking the virus from attaching itself to the cells of the host.

Another research looked at the properties of ginger and their effect on a debilitating illness caused by the Chikungunya virus. The virus transmitted in the tropics by mosquitos can cause severe complications and result in blindness. The researchers have concluded that ginger has high potential to treat Chikungunya, but it can be a valuable agent combatting viral resistance to standard drugs.

Gingerol, sesquiterpenes and other compounds active in ginger root also play a significant supportive role in recovery from a viral infection. They do it through boosting the activity of enzymes and increasing appetite.

Ginger is well know for it many culinary uses in both sweet and savoury dishes. Queen Elizabeth I was a fan of the gingerbread man and employed a royal gingerbread-maker. She held banquets where gingerbread men were formed to represent particular dignitaries.

We know for certain that gingerbread was popular amongst the elite in the Middle Ages.

If you are keen to try a recipe for Medieval Gynger Brede you can look it up here in a 15th century English cookery book held at the British Library.

The medicinal properties of gingerbread are not significant, but it is a fun way to introduce children to the taste of ginger

Most children also like freshly made juice made from carrot, orange, cucumber and a piece of ginger, or ginger tea made with a slice of ginger and lemon sweetened with a teaspoon of honey. It is warming, soothing and a perfect nightcap.

However, if you want to take advantage of the potent antiviral and other medicinal properties of ginger, I recommend ginger in a capsule form. I also use ginger oil which I use in foot baths, and for inhalations, especially when coming down with a cold, or feel run down.

MS Guardio is writing a series of short articles about the healing properties some plants, flowers and foods at this time of pandemic and national crisis.

The healing properties of the olive tree have been known for centuries. The tree is likely to have originated from the island of Crete where it was grown as early as 3500 BC for medicinal and cosmetic purposes. Olive oil was used for anointing the body in ancient Greece, and it was an important crop of the Romans about 600 BC.

Homer called it ‘liquid gold’, and Hippocrates ‘the great healer’.

Olive oil has probably first arrived in Britain with the Romans but its use became common only recently.

Mrs Beeton, the celebrity chef of the 19th century, wrote in her 1861 Book of Household Management:

“The oil extracted from olives, called olive oil, or salad oil, is, with the continentals, in continual request, more dishes being prepared with than without it, we should imagine.

With us, it is principally used in mixing a salad, and when thus employed, it tends to prevent fermentation, and is an antidote against flatulence.”

Amazing healing properties of olive leaf

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.4″ _module_preset=”default”]

It is only in the 1990s that olive oil has become a general public staple, promoted for its culinary use and healing properties.

But it is not only the oil extracted from the olives that is valuable. The small, leathery, oval leaves of the olive tree are precious as they hold amazing properties – the healing compounds in far stronger concentration than found in the olives themselves.

The secret of the leaves’ healing properties lies in the amount of powerful antioxidants – polyphenols, packed inside them. The polyphenols help protect olive trees from insect attack and combat the stress of prolonged exposure to the dry heat of the Mediterranean region where the olive trees grow.

The main polyphenol compounds found in the olive leaves are oleuropein and flavonoids. They protect the trees which are known for their longevity , but also scavenge free radicals in humans, offering strong protection against disease, especially in relation to cancer and inflammation-related conditions.

The polyphenol compounds in the olive leaf have strong anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

    In particular they can:

    • protect from cancer and support cardiovascular health
    • reduce bacterial infections
    • re-balance blood sugar

While further human studies are needed, there is good evidence that olive tree polyphenols through their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties can prevent cancer.

The particular combination prevalent in olive leaf, can protect our DNA and may also inhibit the progression of certain cancer diseases. Research suggests that olive leaf oleuropein in particular is able to target specific cancer cells and cause their collapse and death.

Since olive polyphenols have a similar structure to oestrogens, they may also reduce the prevalence of hormone related cancers, such as breast, prostate and pancreas. .

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.9.4″ _module_preset=”default”]

Olive leaf is probably best known for its antibacterial properties.

The oleuropein in the olive leaf can heal by decreasing the severity of bacterial infections and is especially effective against:

    • urinary tract infections
    • certain types of pneumonia
    • skin infections including abscesses
    • heart valve infections
    • throat, sinuses and middle ear infections
    • listeria food poisoning.

An interesting study was carried out in New Zealand in 2019. After nine weeks of olive leaf supplementation, the sick day absences among the secondary school school sports team reduced by an impressive 28 percent due to its beneficial effect on upper respiratory illness.

The importance of the anti-bacterial properties of olive leaf must not be underestimated. Not only it is effective against bacterial infections but it can heal without any major side effects. As bacteria are becoming more resistant to antibiotics, natural anti-bacterial compounds like olive leaf take on a new significance.

I have used it for many years, and fed it to my kids and my grandchild always with excellent results and minimal side effects.

A study involving Japanese women suggests that the sterols in aloe vera pro-mote the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid. The facial wrinkles of 54 study participants significantly improved after eight weeks of regular use of aloe vera gel.

A more recent (2020) study has shown that after a 12 week of treatment with aloe vera sterols, resulted in a significant improvement in skin acne and fingernail brittleness. A fascinating ‘side effect’ of the study was a marked increase in skin hydration of the participants – something that was not planned for before the study was initiated.

The benefits of aloe vera also include its use as a great remedy for dry hair or dandruff. The vitamins and minerals nourishing hair, and the enzymes in the gel benefit the scalp and promote the regeneration of skin around the hair follicles.

The benefits of using aloe vera to assist with healing, smooth and moisturise skin are indisputable. Aloe vera is much more than just a plant, and I am a great fan.

I grow it, I drink it, and I use it to as an anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial agent on my skin. I slap it on to plump up my skin, and to moisturize my hair.

My favourite aloe vera products are made by Garnier, Dr Organic and Éclat.

But the use of this amazing plant, does not stop here. I have recently discovered bed sheets infused with aloe vera which apparently promote better sleep!

I am keen to try clothes made with aloe vera, infused for softness and a natural fresh fragrance .

I am also considering a new memory foam mattress made with aloe vera fabric which claims to offer the benefits of renewing skin cells, as well as comfort and aloe vera luxury.

The benefits of aloe vera have been known since the earliest history of the world.

The light green, succulent plant is native to the dry and hot Arabian Peninsula but can be grown in Britain in pots and in sunny borders.

The first known description of aloe vera comes from the Mesopotamian Ebers Papyrus, a guide to medicinal plants compiled some 6,000 years ago!

The Papyrus lists the benefits of aloe vera and provides recipes for treatment of burns, ulcers, skin diseases and allergies.

Ancient Egyptians called aloe vera ‘the plant of immortality’. Its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties were utilised to make embalming mixtures to preserve the bodies of pharaohs to help them reach eternal life. We are told that a mixture of ‘myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds’ was also used to embalm the body of Jesus.

But aloe vera was often in short supply and Alexander the Great invaded the Middle Eastern island of Socotra, famous for its abundance of quality aloe vera, and secured a stock to treat his wounded soldiers.

Today, aloe vera remains one of the main ingredients of the popular health tonic: the Swedish Bitters which according to its 15th century creator ‘guarantees longevity’ when taken regularly.

The healing benefits of aloe vera are linked to the incredible number of its bioactive agents – over 200 of them! In particular it contains:

    • sugars – polysaccharides, including acemannan
    • antioxidants – anthraquinones, such as emodin, aloin, and aloesin

The healing benefits of aloe vera arise because it is packed full of enzymes, minerals, amino acids, sterols, hormones and vitamins A, C, E, B12.

MS Guardio is writing a series of short articles about the healing properties some plants, flowers and foods at this time of pandemic and national crisis.

    Main benefits of aloe vera

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”]

One of the best known benefits of Aloe vera is probably its skin moisturizing and protective activities. It is commonly used externally as gel applied to skin to moisturize it, pre-vent wrinkles and to heal wounds.

I cover the amazing benefits of aloe vera gel in greater detail in my next blog – so look out for it!

But the benefits of aloe vera go far and beyond its moisturizing and wound healing properties. The antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties of aloe vera have recently been investigated for potential in treating eye diseases.

A study published in February 2021 concluded that eye drops containing aloe extract may be used to support standard treatment for cornea deterioration.  Aloe vera can also:

    • Support digestion,
    • Lower blood sugar,
    • Potentially protect the heart and bones, and
    • Have anti-cancer effect.

The Universidad Complutense de Madrid has published a useful article and diagram showing the Properties of Aloe Vera and its Major Active Constituents.

Studies have shown the various benefits of aloe vera for digestive health.

Another of the many benefits of Aloe vera is as a strong laxative used to cleanse the colon and treat constipation.

There has been some controversy around the ability of aloe vera to support other digestive problems.

However, a controlled study in 2015 concluded that consuming aloe vera juice improves digestion and relieves hyperacidity, and reflux symptoms.

    [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” max_width=”2560px”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”]

Another study confirmed that aloe vera juice can reduce pain and discomfort in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

I suffered for a number of years with silent reflux, with symptoms of a postnasal drip, sensation of a lump in my throat and discomfort around my ears. I changed my diet, and took 100ml of aloe vera juice twice a day for four weeks.

I combined it with a daily tablet of DGL liquorice, and soon re-balanced my digestive health with none of the side effects of the standard pharmaceutical treatment. I have been symptom free for two years now.

Aloe vera can help lower blood sugar

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”]

Aloe vera is a traditional medicine used to treat raised blood sugar in many countries in the world. But there is good scientific evidence that aloe vera extract may help improve blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes.

In two other trials, involving non-insulin dependent patients, a normalisation of blood sugar level was shown after a six-week treatment with aloe vera extract.

If you are receiving treatment for diabetes, do consult your doctor before embarking on supplementation with aloe vera juice. But it is definitely worth a try if you want to reduce a slightly raised blood sugar.

The benefits of aloe vera for heart and bones are interesting but less well researched.

The vitamins and other nutrients in aloe vera plant combat oxidative stress and may help prevent heart disease.

Aloe vera may also have some protective effect on bone, and in particular in osteopenia and osteoporosis. Research has shown that the anti-inflammatory properties of aloe vera can be helpful for arthritis sufferers, without the usual side-effects caused by the arthritis drugs.

Further research into the benefits of aloe vera’s anti-cancer properties and efficacy is needed.

An article published in the Lancet, one of the best-known medical journals globally, describes a laboratory study which looked at combining aloe vera extract with standard chemotherapy in breast cancer and cervical cancer. The experiment resulted in an increased rate of cancer cell death and a reduced cancer growth.

Cancer Research UK quotes several studies which looked at emodin extracted from aloe vera. Amazingly, the compound was able to block the growth of neck and head cancers in test tubes, and may slow down the growth of glioblastoma cells, a type of brain cancer.

Just as with pharmacological medications, nature supplements and plants used as for health reasons can have side effects and should be used with care.

Aloe vera is a powerful laxatives and can cause severe diarrhoea if taken in large doses.

Aloe vera might interact with other drugs or herbs. Make sure you talk to your doctor if you plan to combine it with medicines.

You can buy aloe vera juice in most chemists and health food shops. You can also enjoy the benefits of aloe vera juice by making it yourself.  You will need a fresh aloe vera leaf – some greengrocers, including Planet Organic stock them regularly.

Cut the spiky edges from the sides and very carefully slice off the skin on the flat side of the leaf to remove the gel from inside. This gel is the edible part of the plant.

But sure to remove all traces of the green skin and the sticky yellow-red latex-like sap which is immediately under the skin of the leaf. A study on consumption of a whole leaf (including the skin and the sticky stuff) by mice found some evidence of carcinogenic activity. Commercially available aloe vera juice have the potentially carcinogenic compounds removed.

Blend the gel until smooth, then add water to the desired consistency. You can:

    • drink the juice on its own.
    • add aloe vera juice to smoothies and desserts.

The geographic location, growing conditions, and post-harvest treatments determines the efficacy of aloe vera, so be sure to obtain your fresh leaves or commercially available aloe products from a reputable supplier.

People have been enjoying the benefits of this amazing plant since the earliest history of the world. While further research into aloe vera is needed, most science supports the claims made by traditional wisdom, and those all over the world who use it and enjoy the therapeutic benefits.

Grave stones originating from 2,000 BC were carved to resemble elder tree leaves and the tree’s ability to grow roots from damaged twigs was considered by the Druids a symbol of magic and regeneration.

The Anglo-Saxons believed the healing power of elder tree protected against witches and all evil . They also gave it the English name, elder – meaning fire or furnace as the elder tree branches spit sparks when lit.

This attractive large shrub can grow 15 m in height and can live for 60 years. It has magnificent cream, sweet-smelling flowers in late May/early June and purple-black berries that follow in summer. It is native to the UK and grows commonly in our woods and hedgerows.

The healing power of Elder tree

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”]The healing power of Elder receives a mention in the famous herbal of Nicholas Culpeper, the English botanist and herbalist of the 17th century who claimed it calmed down inflammation and cured ‘dropsy and piles’.

Today, the long tradition of elder’s healing powers continues. This is not surprising as the elderberries and the elderflowers are an excellent source of protein, amino acids, minerals and vitamins, in particular vitamins A and C, potassium, folate, and calcium .

They also contain polyphenols (they give the purple colour to the berries) and flavonoids, both with strong antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are natural scavengers and prevent disease by detecting and detoxifying harmful chemicals in our bodies. It is these antioxidants that take credit for the most impressive healing powers of the elder.

The healing power of elder includes both elderflowers and the elderberries, which are are anti-inflammatory; anti-bacterial and have anti-viral properties. In particular they are helpful in preventing and reducing the symptoms of:

    • colds and flu
    • elevated cholesterol

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”]Probably the best known commercial extract of elderberries to help fight colds and related infections is Sambucol.

There are formulas suitable for adults, children and babies some fortified with zinc, vitamins D and C. Lozenges and tablets are also available.

A London-based family company, Biona have too captured the healing power of elderberries in a bottle. They produce organic pure pressed elderberry juice, a natural treatment for cough, and colds that can be purchased from many online stores. It tastes great and you can also drizzle it on desserts and on your morning toast.

You can harness the healing power of elder by gathering the elderflowers and elderberries yourself, but be mindful that home cooking and processing elderflowers and the berries may affect their healing powers.

The content of polyphenols reduces by approximately 40% in the first 30 days of storage but then remained unchanged.

However, the therapeutic compounds in tea made from elderberry flowers were relatively unchanged over their 21-months of storage in the experiment.

I go foraging for elderflowers most summers. I fry clusters of the fragrant flowers in light batter for a delicious snack, make elderflower cordial, and dry the flowers to use as tea whenever I feel a cold coming.

Woodland Trust have a very informative webpage on how to identify elder tree, and if you would like to go elderflowers/elderberries foraging with a group, you can check Countryfile for best foraging courses and events in the country.

The 17th century botanist Culpeper was right in his praise of the elder tree. Elder helps to reduce inflammation and affects the course of respiratory disease. It also provides an alternative to misuse of antibiotics for common colds and is a natural aid for flu and elevated cholesterol.

Take yourself back to a simpler time and the heady days of childhood. Jumping in puddles with no care, running free with little knowledge of the crazy world around you.

Simple pleasures were an absolute delight to the senses and enjoyment of the complete moment you were in was everything.

Perhaps a much loved memory is of growing and looking after your first plant. The pure joy at seeing a tiny shoot peeping through the brown soil, the thrill of watching it grow taller and stronger and eventually burst into bloom.

MS Guardio is writing a series of short articles about the healing properties some plants, flowers and foods at this time of pandemic and national crisis.

Vibrant oranges, reds and yellows and green capture a paint box of our childhoods. Big chunky blocks of colour ready to be plastered across a crisp white A5 canvas spread out in front of us.

The Nasturtium is a simple flower with bold petals and lilypad like leaves. Its official name is Tropaeolum, which means nose tweaker! What a cheeky name for a fun flower,

it just seems that this flower was made for kids! John Gerard, an English herbalist received Nasturtium seeds in 1597 from Europe and so the seeds were sown (pardon the pun!) for this popular flower to flourish in our gardens ever since.
    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”H2: healing benefits ” _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”]

The healing benefits of Nasturtium flower power

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”]Nasturtiums have a surprising number of health benefits. They are a source of micro elements such as potassium, phosphorus, calcium and magnesium, and macro elements, including zinc, copper and iron. Nasturtium flower power encompasses:

    • antioxidants
    • antibacterial
    • antimicrobial,
    • antifungal,
    • hypotensive,
    • expectorant and
    • anticancer effects.

Nasturtium flower power is an amazing source of Vitamin C, which helps boost our immune system. A little like Echinacea, Nasturtium can, at the first sign of a cold, help fight off the dreaded lurgy! Nasturtium tea, taken with a little honey can ease coughs by loosening mucus and aids in clearer breathing.

Nasturtium also has wonderful antioxidant properties and, as such, Nasturtium is high in Phenolic compounds.

Phenolic compounds have a key role in defending against free radicals which bombard us on a daily basis. This can be used in the fight against cancer and also dementia.

As well as antioxidant properties, nasturtium has excellent antibacterial properties that can alleviate the symptoms of urinary tract infections.

Take the nasturtium flower power with a little horseradish and you will find an effective treatment that also prevents recurrence of the infection.

As can be seen in the Ammi and Lavender, nasturtium flower power can be used as fantastic hair tonic. Simmer the flowers in about a litre of water for 15 minutes and store in the fridge. This can then be used as an application that will help to boost your hair’s natural vitality.

It also has anti bacterial effectiveness which can treat dandruff. Whilst enjoying your tea you can be safe in the knowledge that it can help with improving your skin condition, thus providing an anti-aging effect.

What a fantastic way to encourage little ones in, not only the delights of flowers, but also cooking.

This is an engaging and fun way to gather together and create a delicious and colourful feast.

Nasturtium tastes similar to a peppery watercress and so lends itself very well to a garnish for salads.
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” max_width=”2560px”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”]The whole Nasturtium flower power is edible so just pick from the garden, wash well, and pop them on top of your salad. Incredibly simple but will transform an ordinary dish to an eye catching masterpiece!

For an alternative to capers, the freshly picked buds and seeds can be pickled. Add to the topping of a homemade pizza for a kick to the tomato sauce and enjoy an alfresco evening.
Another little idea is to make flower butter.

Finely chop the Nasturtium flowers and their leaves and mix into a small bowl of slightly warmed butter. Mould the butter into a cylinder, wrap in greaseproof paper and set in the fridge.

This butter makes an addition to steamed veggies. But perhaps the most intriguing use of your Nasturtium flower power butter is to spread onto fresh toast and add strawberry jam! Why not try this little treat on a Sunday morning with a steaming cup of tea in the sun. What a way to start your day!
    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”H2: Growing Nasturtium” _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”]

Grow nasturtium flower power in your garden

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”]Unlike many other flowers, Nasturtiums can be sown directly outside in the soil. Grab those seeds, a willing pair of hands (or three!) and dash outside. Seeds can be sown from March to May and will bloom all summer and into Autumn. Rake the soil well and sow about 20mm below the surface in rows of 30mm apart.

Surprisingly, the nasturtium thrives in poor soil. You can create poor soil by adding fine gravel or grit. This also has the added benefit of creating excellent drainage, which the nasturtium loves.

Once growing, if you can see they are starting to crowd each other out you can simply dig some of them up and transplant elsewhere.

There are two types of nasturtium, probably the most exciting is the trailing variety. Ensure this flower has a trellis to cling onto and watch it climb and trail and burst its colours over your garden. You could also pop these into a hanging basket and watch them cascade.

    Carefully goes it!

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”]As always, consult a doctor if you are a little unsure of how to safely use Nasturtium.

    Origins of the superfood garlic

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.0″ _module_preset=”default”]

Garlic is one of the oldest known horticultural crops and has been used as superfood since ancient times.

There is historical evidence that it was used by the Babylonians 4500 years ago and by the Chinese 2000 years ago.

Well preserved garlic was found in the tomb of Tutankhamen, and was meant to accompany the young king on his afterlife journey.

Garlic is mentioned in the Bible, the Quran, and the Talmud.

Numerous ancient medical texts talk about its healing properties and Hippocrates prescribed garlic to prevent disease and to treat it.

Olympic athletes in ancient Greece used the superfood garlic to enhance their performance .

A number of countries claim to be the place of garlic’s origin, but most certainly this superfood was first grown around the majestic mountains of Tien Shan in West China, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan from where it spread throughout the world.

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”H2: Garlic in UK” _builder_version=”4.9.0″ _module_preset=”default”]

    Garlic in the UK

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.0″ _module_preset=”default”]

Garlic came to Europe during Medieval times and was hailed as the miracle cure, but particularly useful healing leprosy, skin diseases, arthritis, snake and insect bites, parasites, cough and various other infections.

Necklaces of the garlic superfood were worn around the neck to ward off evil spirits. The Spanish and Portuguese took it to America where Indigenous Americans used it as medicine. The city of Chicago takes its name from the word: Chicagaoua – Indigenous American word for wild garlic .

The name garlic comes from an old Anglo-Saxon word: gar (a spear) and lac (a plant) reflecting the shape of its leaves .

The superfood was commonly used in England in the Middle Ages, then in the Victorian era, and in 1918 during the Spanish Flu pandemic, it was used as a preventative measure, and a natural cure .

It fell out of favour during the Second World War and gradually became popular again only in the 1990s when people started to travel more, and developed a taste for garlic-laced cuisine.

I remember visiting a supermarket in North London in mid 1970s and engaging in an animated discussion with a sales assistant and a fellow shopper who knew what garlic looked like ‘because her father lived in France and had a French girlfriend’!

    Garlic is superfood.

It has potent medicinal properties and is packed with vital nutrients, including antioxidants, amino acids, vitamin C, vitamin B6, calcium, selenium and manganese. Garlic superfood is:

    • Anti-microbial, anti-fungal
    • Can lower high blood pressure
    • May prevent cancer
    • Anti-viral
    • Repels bugs

    Garlic superfood – anti-microbial and anti-fungal

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.0″ _module_preset=”default”]

The antimicrobial properties of superfood garlic were first clearly documented when a compound called allicin was extracted from garlic by two American chemists .

Allicin has now been well researched and has shown to reduce the activity of numerous bacteria, including drug resistant strains of E coli. Allicin is also effective against some parasites, and Candida albicans fungus that can cause urinary, genital, and oral infections.

A fascinating research by the University of Malaysia has shown that when used in combination with other antibiotics or antifungals, allicin enhances ‘the antimicrobial activities of these substances and improved the antimicrobial efficacy’ .

Garlic superfood – hypertension and heart health

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.0″ _module_preset=”default”]

It is believed that allicin is the main compound also responsible for the superfood’s positive effects on cardiovascular health.

Superfood garlic can efficiently reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure by preventing the production of the hormone – angiotensin II . Too much angiotensin can cause fluid retention in the body and can increase blood pressure.

Raw garlic, garlic powder and other garlic preparations have all shown to reduce the level of angiotensin II and lower blood pressure by up to 11.2 mm Hg, and without the usual side effects of blood pressure medicines.

Various trials have also shown that aged garlic extract called Kyolic garlic can also decrease arterial stiffness, elevated cholesterol levels and blood ‘stickiness’. In one experiment, two capsules of high potency formula of Kyolic garlic a day produced impressive cardiovascular benefits after 2-3 months of daily use.

My husband, a great fan of garlic superfood, has recently conducted his own experiment trying to control hypertension. He stopped using salt and boosted his daily intake of garlic. Within four weeks his blood pressure stabilised and has stayed at a healthy 120/75 mmHg ever since. He plans to discuss the outcomes of the experiment with our GP during his next check up.

There have been studies to show that the superfood has anti-tumour properties and is able to block the formation of cancer-causing substances.

A 2018 Nottingham University research indicated that eating garlic can reduce risk of certain cancers, and a separate French study showed that garlic is a protective factor for breast cancer.

But perhaps the most exciting research into superfood garlic has been in the con-text of COVID-19.

Not only does garlic seem to have a role in reducing COVID-19 infections but its chemical compounds appear to reverse most immune systems dysfunctions observed in some patients with COVID-19.

In particular the ‘cytokine storm’ which has led to the hospitalization and, unfortunately the death of so many Covid-19 patients.

Cytokines are molecules which act as messengers in our bodies alerting the immune system to ‘an outside invader’ which needs to be neutralised.

    [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.8.2″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_image src=”https://msguardio.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/wild-garlic-300×225-1.jpg” alt=”Wild garlic is related to but different from cultivated garlic superfood” title_text=”Superfood garlic is related but different from wild garlic” align=”center” force_fullwidth=”on” _builder_version=”4.9.0″ _module_preset=”default” box_shadow_style=”preset1″][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.0″ _module_preset=”default”]

Wild garlic is related to but different from cultivated garlic. It is usually found in damp woodland or on riverbanks.  It grows in abundance in the British countryside between March and June.

    [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” max_width=”2560px”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.0″ _module_preset=”default”]

But in some cases, an excessive production of particular cytokines can lead to over-activity of white blood cells resulting in an overwhelming inflammation.

Some experts suggest that Cytokine storm is also one of the causes behind ‘long Covid’ where people no longer have the virus in their bodies but suffer from ex-haustion and other debilitating post-viral symptoms.

A number of research papers published over the past few months indicate that organosulfur compounds in the superfood, including allicin, have the ability to decrease the concentration of these rogue pro-inflammatory cytokines and prevent or reduce the inflammation.

COVID-19 is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation. Understanding, information and research is constantly evolving. MS Guardio had done its best to ensure this information is accurate at time of publication.  Please seek medical advice if in doubt.

    Garlic and its uses

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.0″ _module_preset=”default”]

The strength of superfood garlic’s medicinal properties are dependant on how it is prepared for consumption. The best way to enjoy the nutrients is to eat garlic raw, finely chopped, crushed or minced. Commercially available supplements of garlic, and in particular aged Kyolic garlic also offer high bioavailability of allicin. But do not microwave it or cook it for a long time as it will degrade the beneficial compounds.

Isle of Wight’s Garlic Farm offers some great recipes for cooking with the superfood including garlic desserts – apparently Paul Young, the inspirational British chocolatier, once developed a caramelized garlic chocolate!

They also have recipes for a garden garlic bug buster, a natural pesticide , I have been using in my gardens for years. It does work and it also keeps the squirrels from digging up plants, so well worth a try!

Garlic superfood is fun and easy to grow. Children love sticking the individual cloves in the soil, and it is a good way of getting them interested in gardening and growing food. Now is the perfect time to do it, and by June you should have your first crop ready for use in the kitchen. BBC Gardeners’ World offers useful tips on growing garlic. I have found their video on growing garlic in clay soil particularly helpful.

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.0″ _module_preset=”default”]

Garlic is normally well tolerated but unfortunately, some people are allergic to the superfood. Symptoms may include:

    • hives
    • congestion and runny nose
    • shortness of breath
    • swelling of lips or mouth

I have a mild intolerance to garlic, but following a strict 12 months garlic-free diet, I am now able to have a clove or two of the superfood every now and again.

For more information on allergies and food intolerance, please visit the NHS site , or speak to a medical practitioner.

I also grow masses of garlic in my garden. My husband enjoys cooking with the freshly picked bulbs and used chopped up leaves in salads, and I enjoy looking at the handsome plants as they grow.

Garlic also protects my crops from aphids and other unwelcome garden bugs.

Garlic is an amazing superfood that has been used by humans as food and medicine since ancient times.

Its ability to dampen down bacterial and fungal infections, reduce blood pressure and prevent or keep some cancers under control has been well documented.

But the new discoveries into garlic’s potential to help fight COVID-19 inflammation show that there could be other medicinal secrets that this humble bulb, yet to discover.

If you can’t consume garlic, you can still enjoy the benefits of its smell in cooking. A 2000 study into the effects of garlic bread on family interactions claims that ‘the smell of garlic bread enhanced positive family reactions by 68.4%, and the taste of it, increased pleasant communication by an staggering 99.4%.’

A delicate little flower that looks like an exploding firework.

A beautiful flower that not only looks just gorgeous by itself but also compliments the beauty of flowers it can be arranged with.

Isn’t it just wonderful the Ammi, with no pretension, can enhance and delight. Without ostentation, the amazing Ammi works its magic on us.

MS Guardio is writing a series of short articles about the healing properties some plants, flowers and foods at this time of pandemic and national crisis.

There are two common types of ammi –  Ammi majus and Ammi visnaga. They seemingly intertwine betwixt and between. In terms of their medicinal properties and benefits they are quite different.

The amazing Ammi majus has many names including lace flower and Queen Anne’s lace and bishop’s weed to name but a few. These names are hardly surprising when lace is both delicate and hardwearing, a delight to behold but holding a practical purpose. So don’t be fooled by it fragile appearance, the Ammi is incredibly hardy.

Don’t be sad if, when putting your nose to the amazing Ammi, there is no scent. This flower doesn’t relinquish a delectable smell but what it lacks in scent it more than makes up for in a feast for our eyes!

The Ammi name is derived from the Greek word ammos meaning sand. More than likely pertaining to its natural habitat, warm North Africa.

Fairly little is known about the health benefits of this fabulous flower. But fear not, studies and research are being carried out so we can use the amazing ammi to our benefit.

    Ammi visnaga

Ammi visnaga has been used in traditional medicine for the treatment of renal colic, mild anginal symptoms, treatment of abdominal cramps.  More specifically, it contains khellin which promotes the widening of blood vessels, one of its more well known health benefits. In some cultures it has been used as an antidiabetic agent.

It can be used to reduce inflammation of the skin and can also be used to help treat psoriasis and alopecia areata, a form of hair loss.

Studies have shown Ammi visnaga to have the following efficasies:

    • anti-inflammatory
    • antimicrobial
    • hypertension

In particular, it was found that It was found that an injection of visnagin lowered blood pressure without affecting the heart rate.

Ammi visnaga was used by the ancient Egyptians to treat Vitiligo, a condition that causes white patches, in varying shapes and sizes, on the surface of the skin. Later studies have shown that in a test setting, a small number of participants showed a repigmentation of their skin after using Ammi visnaga consistently for three months.

    Ammi majus benefits

Amazing Ammi majus has been used in folk medicine for hundreds of years. In recent years, Ammi majus has been studied as having amazing anticancer properties. Indeed it seems that it has high efficacy in reducing cancerous tumours.

Amazing Ammi majus extracts have been shown to have antiviral, antimicrobial, antioxidant properties, and to have a relaxant effect, cardiovascular effect, hypotensive and so on. The aerial parts is used to treat skin problems, psoriasis and vitiligo.

Ammi majus is used for asthma, chest pain (angina), kidney stones, a skin disorder that causes white patches to develop on the skin (vitiligo), and scaly, itchy skin (psoriasis). The prescription drug methoxsalen used to treat psoriasis, eczema, and some other skin disorders used to be made from Ammi majus, but more scientific research needs to be done.

The amazing ammi is certainly trying to come into its own in the world of medicine. Watch this space!

Grow amazing Ammi in your garden

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.0″ _module_preset=”default”]

Growing the amazing ammi majus is surprisingly easy. If you want a country cottage feeling to your borders this is most definitely the flower for you.

It seems prudent to sow indoors to start. Sprinkle the seeds in trays on top of the soil and then lightly dust with a further layer of soil. Ammi seeds are tiny so ensure you only use a very small amount on the top of them else they will struggle to break through. Germination should take about 1-4 weeks and you should always try to keep at a temperature between 13-18 degrees before then planting out in spring and after the last frost.

If you haven’t quite got to grips planting them at this time, don’t despair, you can plant out in August or September for a bumper crop the following year. Keep an eye on watering them in the dryer summer months. Ammi loves the sunshine but does not like to be too dry so ensure they are well watered but in well drained soil.

The amazing Ammi will grow fairly tall if planted in August/ September, between about 1-3 metres. It is therefore wise to consider staking before they get too tall and droop over. If you want that magazine perfect border, you definitely don’t want them falling over!! If you plant in spring, flowers will be a little smaller and more likely to resist having a little lay down!

Also have a look out for Ammi’s number one fan, the Common Red Soldier Beetle. They sound a little terrifying but will bring an interesting insect to your garden that you may not have seen before. These little troopers will also benefit the rest of your garden by eating those slimy pests, the slug!

A brief history of Green tea’s rich brew of antioxidants and other nutrients should probably begin with the Chinese Emperor Shennong (2737 BC) who stopped to rest under a tree. A few tea leaves fell into his cup of hot water. The Emperor drunk the light green brew, and found it incredibly refreshing and tasty.

The legend has it that from then on he asked his servants to prepare the drink for him by steeping fresh tea leaves in hot water.

We have no way of checking whether this story is true but we know it was first recorded by a Chinese scholar, Lu Yu in the first ever book on tea: ‘The Classic of Tea’. This work, compiled some 1,200 years ago is considered the first written record of green tea being brewed and consumed.

Marco Polo was probably the first person to bring tea to the West as he travelled to China in the 13th century. It is also possible that the Islamic traders introduced green tea to Europe even earlier. However, the first written records come from 1610 when ‘a shipment of a few jars of green tea for some elites’ arrived in Holland and Portugal.

Today, tea is one of the most popular drinks in the world. In Britain alone we drink approximately 100,000,000 cups of tea every day, with green tea increasing in popularity due to its therapeutic properties.

    Green tea’s antifungal activity

The anti-fungal activity of green tea too has been well documented, especially against the opportunistic yeast, candida albicans.

One of the studies shows that when combined with standard medical treatment, the green tea catechins enhance its anti-fungal effect.

Green tea’s rich brew of antioxidants help protects against flu

The catechins in green tea can also offer protection against flu. Since the 1990s, several studies have shown that green tea’s rich brew of antioxidants may decrease flu infection rates and some cold viruses.  Gargling with green tea catechin may help protect against developing flu infection.

In addition, it boosts the antibacterial effectiveness of antibiotics used to treat skin infections and can prevent food-borne bacteria, like E.coli, and Helicobacter pylori from taking hold inside the body.

Can green tea help reduce Covid-related risks?

A recently published study looked at the ability of catechins in green tea to reduce overall risks related to COVID-19. The preliminary findings are exciting and show a striking difference between countries with high and low consumption of green tea .

A study by scientists from the Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine and the Central Research Institute of Japan showed that bioactive compounds in green tea, oolong tea and black tea had a remarkable antiviral effect on the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative pathogen of COVID- 19.

They found that the tea compounds, especially TSA and TFDG, significantly reduced the replication and release of SARS-CoV-2. There is much new research emerging on the importance of tea in the battle with COVID-19, but many of these studies have not yet been peer-reviewed and it is early days.

Sit back and partake of the simple pleasure of green tea’s rich brew of antioxidants for it is undoubtedly doing you a power of good in the process.

Green tea’s rich brew of antioxidants also contains caffeine which can boost alertness but can also have some (transient) side effects.

There is 35mg of caffeine in a standard 8oz cup (95mg in a cup of brewed coffee). This is a moderate amount but for people like myself, who are sensitive to caffeine, even this amount can cause dizziness, light-headedness, and occasionally a headache. To avoid this, I limit my intake of green tea to no more than 2 cups a day.

My preferred varieties are Sencha or Matcha (grown in the shade to boost its chlorophyll content). I have recently discovered decaffeinated green tea, which boasts similar properties to its caffeinated sister. I regularly drink Tetley and Clipper Organic brands to ensure I get all the benefits without the side effects of caffeine.

If you suffer from anaemia and iron deficiency, moderate your intake of all tea, including green tea. The tannins in tea can block the absorption of iron into your body.

Green tea can thin blood, so contact your doctor if you plan to start drinking it regularly and have bleeding disorder.

Not only is green tea refreshing and tasty. Green tea’s rich brew of antioxidants has also been shown to have significant anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. It can enhance standard medical treatment for rheumatoid arthritis and can protect from flu and various bacterial and fungal infections.

Green tea’s rich brew of antioxidants may also hold the answer to why some countries are doing so much better in preventing COVID-19 and could minimise the associated risks.

Green tea leaves are not oxidised like black leaves and  you should never use boiling water (100 degrees C) to make your cup of green tea. To enjoy the full delicate flavour of the tea you should use water at about 150 to 180 degrees Centigrade, well short of boiling. Then allow the tea to steep for about three minutes, before sitting down with a good book and your steaming cup of delicious green tea.
