The medicinal power of echinacea has been known for thousands of years.

    Coneflowers in the Snow

    Sentries, standing tall, erect
    waiting for spring
    the coneflowers in the snow
    frozen in place
    green long gone,
    the brown turning to gray
    the seeds still there
save for those the birds picked
    standing with the flocks,
    the other garden plants,
    tall above the snow

Apart from the medicinal power of Echinacea, it is a spectacular plant with large daisy like flowers in various shades of purple, red, orange, yellow and white. It is considered a flowering herb as not only it is a gorgeous plant to enjoy in your garden and as cut flower, but echinacea has numerous medicinal properties.

Echinacea (from Greek: echino, meaning prickly, because of its spiky centre) is also known as coneflower after the plant’s cone-shaped middle. The generic name, Rudbeckia purpurea, comes from the name of Olaf Rudbeck, a botanist and physician, and the son of a great Swedish botanist who studied the plant in mid 18th century.

Echinacea is native to the eastern and central prairies of North America.

The medicinal power of echinacea was well known to indigenous Americans and settlers alike.  It was one of the most popular remedies in the medicine chest of the early settlers and pioneer doctors, commonly used for colds, coughs, toothache, snake bites, rheumatism, arthritis, various infections and burns.

It has been used by indigenous American tribes as a sacred medicinal herb for centuries The medicine men washed their hands in Echinacea juice in order to pick out meat from boiling stews with the plant juice acting as burn preventative!

The first commercial European preparations of echinacea were made in mid 20th century in Germany, and then in Switzerland . Echinacea first arrived in England in 1699, and has been growing in popularity as both, a garden plant and a herbal remedy, ever since.

    The medicinal power of echinacea

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.8.2″ _module_preset=”default”]

The medicinal power of echinacea is wide ranging:

    • anti-inflammatory
    • anti-viral
    • anti-bacterial
    • immune-supporting
    • hydrating and protecting from oxidative stress (skin preparations)

The medicinal power of echinacea has been very well studied. Similar to other medicinal herbs, the strength of echinacea’s medicinal properties is largely dependant on where and how the plant is grown and prepared for consumption. But overall its immune-supporting, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties have been clearly established.

These are linked to the health promoting properties of caftaric and chicoric acids found in all parts of the plant.

Cancer Research UK states that while there is not yet sufficient evidence to use echinacea as a cancer treatment, laboratory studies have shown that echinacea stimulates immune cells and prevents inflammation and caused colon cancer death . Another study by a Canadian researcher showed that echinacea sup-ports natural killer cells and that daily consumption of Echinacea is ‘prophylactic, extends the life span of aging mice, significantly abates leukaemia and extends the life span of leukaemia mice’ .

While we are not mice (though humans are 97% genetically common with mice!), other research has established with a great degree of certainty the medicinal power of echinacea for people who are prone to colds. The Hannover Medical School review of randomized controlled trials in 2015 concluded that Echinacea reduces the risk of respiratory tracts infections by cold viruses by a massive 35% . The British Herbal Medical Association (BHMA) has classified echinacea as a remedy for the relief of symptoms of the common cold as well as influenza type infections.

It seems that the medicinal power of echinacea may have a role in the treatment of COVID-19. The COVID-19 pandemic spearheaded research into effective antivirals to help our white cells fight coronaviruses including those responsible for Covid-19. In September 2020, the Virology Journal published a study into a number of such sub-stances which indicated that a herbal extract of Echinacea purpurea is capable of killing coronaviruses . Another study (awaiting peer review) by the University of Jeddah, published in January this year also suggested strong effects of echinacea against Covid-19.

Echinacea should never be used in place of medicine prescribed by your doctor and other disease protective measures (eg. vaccination, social distancing, masks and hygiene). But it is a great complementary herb if you want to enhance your immune system and promote general well-being.

The medicinal power of echinacea extends to treatment of the skin. Echinacea is a popular skin remedy. In 2010, the International Journal of Cosmetic Science published a study which showed the effectiveness of echinacea cream preparation in improving the condition of skin and reducing wrinkles.

How to benefit from the medicinal power of echinacea

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.8.2″ _module_preset=”default”]

The purple variety of echinacea (echinacea purpurea) is the one most commonly used in commercial preparations of tablets, tincture, cream and as dry herb. All parts of the plant, the leaves, flowers and roots contain medicinal compounds and can be utilized.

    A purple coneflower tea

The caffeine-free herbal tea is the easiest and least expensive preparation that can be made by anyone who has access to echinacea’s roots, flowers or leaves.

You can benefit from the medicinal power of echinacea by growing it in your back garden. It is an easy to grow, hardy perennial that can survive even the coldest of winters!

The Royal Horticultural Society has many wonderful varieties of echinacea on their website, including two echinacea purpurea plants which won the Award of Garden Merit: Rubi Giant and Elton Knight Elbrook. You can see them here:

If you don’t grow your own echinacea, you can buy dry herb for making tea from Neal’s Yard and other suppliers online. It is easy to make. I put 1-2 teaspoons to a cup of water, simmer for 10-15 minutes and sip it throughout the day. It has a pleasant, earthy taste and you can add half a teaspoon of honey or lemon if need be.

    Efficacious Echinacea Tincture

Neal’s Yard echinacea alcohol and water based preparation is their best selling therapeutic tincture. But my favourite one is A Vogel’s Echinaforce, the original commercial preparation first introduced in late 1950’s. I have tested its efficacy over many years on myself, and my family when coming down with cold and flu like symptoms. It has never failed me!
For dosage, follow specific manufacturer’s instructions.

Echinacea tablets for colds and flue

Holland and Barrett sell Echinacea cold and flu capsules and tablets. They are easier to use than the tincture and I always have a supply in my bag when I travel.

    Medicinal power of echinacea cream

A.Vogel make a great skin cream with echinacea which I use for minor burns and cuts, and as daily moisturizer to smooth out my crow’s feet!

DO NOT use it however if you are allergic to nuts as it contains peanut oil.

The medicinal power of echinacea has been amply demonstrated, however, as with all herbs and medications it should be used with care.

Echinacea is not to be taken by children under 12 years old

Since echinacea can stimulate the immune system, people with diabetes or an immune system disorder, and people taking immunosuppressant medication should avoid it or seek medical advice.

Echinacea is probably safe to take during pregnancy but there is not enough data to be absolutely certain this is the case.

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.8.2″ _module_preset=”default”]

The medicinal power of echinacea has been harnessed by people for many centuries. It is a versatile plant which should be at the top of your list of remedies to enhance your overall wellbeing.

It is packed with anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and immune supporting compounds. It can pre-vent, relieve and shorten colds and viral infections.

It is a soothing treatment for various skin conditions, and an effective wrinkle smoother. Give it a try!

The healing power of lavender has been used for a myriad of applications through thousands of years.

Its name derives from the Latin Lavare meaning “to wash”. It is no wonder then that through the ages it has predominantly been used to cleanse and its gorgeous aroma evokes a freshness and renewal.

MS Guardio is writing a series of short articles about the healing properties some plants, flowers and foods at this time of pandemic and national crisis.

A timeless classic, a heady scent from yesteryear. What a beautiful sight to behold, a field of purples or pots of mixed colours in our gardens.

The buzz of bees and the butterflies flitting around the flowers just floods our senses with a calmness that can only be gained from being surrounded by nature.

    The healing power of lavender

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.8.2″ _module_preset=”default”]

There is no doubt about it, we all know and love the scent of lavender.

The healing power of lavender cannot be denied. It evokes a calming sense of peace and relaxation almost as if passed down through time and down the generations. It is no surprise then that lavender’s most famous use is for reliving stress and anxiety.

Crushing the flowers and rubbing into your temples is one simple way to harness the healing power of lavender and incredibly effective.

A soothing cup of lavender in hot water can work wonders in creating a feeling of calm. What better way to unwind than cosying up with a favourite book and a nurturing cuppa to induce a contented feeling.

The healing power of lavender is perhaps most commonly used in the form of an essential oil. In its simplest form, there is something comforting about gently drifting off to sleep on a pillow lightly infused with this delightful aroma.

You may not know that lavender essential oil has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Great for healing burns, acting as a pain reliver, it calms the skin quickly and a drop can kill any nasty bacteria hiding and cleanse you.

Add some dried lavender to your favourite ceramic bowl and place next to your bed to fill your room with the restful scent. Aromatherapy lavender oil droplets can be added to a bowl of warm water or your diffuser to infuse your home.

Perhaps a little extra pampering is needed after a stressful day. Taking a bath is a great stress buster and adding some lavender to the tub can soothe aching body and mind.

If you have a little tea left over, why not give your hair a treat too, by applying direct to the roots. Your hair will love you for it! It would also be beneficial directly to the skin to relive symptoms of eczema and other irritating skin conditions. A soak of dreams that will promote a peaceful sleep and therefore an ability to cope a little better with the following day ahead.

The healing power of lavender includes great antiseptic healing properties. You can apply crushed flowers or a drop of essential oil to wounds which can prevent further infection and speed up the healing process. The antioxidant properties of Lavender, much like the day lily, can help heart health, lowering the risk of stroke.

    Eating and cooking with Lavender

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.8.2″ _module_preset=”default”]

English lavender is great for cooking with and has the sweetest fragrance of all the lavender varieties. Ensure the flowers you are cooking with are truly organic.

If you are cooking with your own home grown lavender, ensure chemicals have not been used on or near your plant. As lavender has such a strong perfume it is wise to use little at first and add further to taste.

A top tip is to add roughly chopped lavender buds to a mixture of herbs de provence. This can then be added to a late evening summer salad.

For an extra special desert add ground buds to a vanilla ice cream for a flowery sweet treat. Add sprigs of the flower to the top of sorbet to instantly add a touch of charm that is bound to impress. For that party to remember add to sparkling wine or, if you are feeling particularly fancy, Champagne!

Lavender can be used in savoury dishes much like Rosemary. Add to bread or meat marinades to infuse its unique flavour. Your guests or family will be pleased you did!

To make the flowers last beyond summer into Autumn, hang a bunch of lavender upside down in a cupboard for about two weeks and then store in Tupperware in the freezer. A great way to banish the onset of winter blues and keep summer memories alive, even if it has started to get chilly!

The healing power of lavender extends to growing and nurturing it in our gardens. We are so used to seeing pots and pots of lavender in our local garden centre, supermarkets and florists, what a great way to easily add a burst of colour and fragrance to our gardens. But let us think about having a go at growing it from seed.

You have the luxury of sowing seeds from February to July so there is plenty of time to enjoy this simple delight. Grab a seed tray or some small pots and fill with slightly damp seed compost and sprinkle the lavender seeds on top.

Cover with a light covering of sieved soil and pop into a propagator or clear polythene bag. Keep the soil moist and in a light sunny position. These conditions will be perfect for germination, which should be about 21 days.

    [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” max_width=”2560px”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.8.2″ _module_preset=”default”]

Once the seedlings are big enough, pinch them out and transfer to slightly bigger pots. They should now get bigger and stronger and will look more familiar to you as the plant we know and love.

Now comes the exciting bit! The planting out! If you are planting earlier in the year, ensure that the last frost has gone. Your young plants will need to get acclimatised to being outside so introduce them slowly and mindfully over about 7 days.

Your Lavender is now ready to adorn your garden, patio or balcony. Make sure it’s in a sunny position with well-drained soil and prune back in at the end of summer when the flowers have finished. This encourages the following years growth and ensures a full plant. If you do not prune, over time the plant will become woody.

The spent flower stems can be harvest and dried for use throughout the year in the home.

MS Guardio has also written about the healing properties of the oregano.

Oregano (Origanum vulgare), sometimes called wild marjoram, is an aromatic herb originally from the hills and mountain regions of the Mediterranean and western Asia, although it is also found in parts of Mexico and the United States. However, it is also native to the British Isles, although it is better know here as wild marjoram (not to be confused with sweet marjoram (Origanum marjorana).

    The beneficial properties of the herb have been known for more than two thousand years.[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” max_width=”2560px”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.8.2″ _module_preset=”default”]

MS Guardio is writing a series of short articles about the healing properties some plants, flowers and foods at this time of pandemic and national crisis.

The herb has long been a core ingredient in Mediterranean food, but it is also known for both its great nutritional value and its remarkable healing properties, in particular, it is a powerful antibacterial essential oil.

Ancient Greek philosopher, Aristotle, noticed tortoises eating oregano after eating snakes and thought the plant might counteract the poison.

Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine, used oregano as an antiseptic and as a cure for stomach and respiratory ailments.

Pliny the Elder considered it a remedy for bad digestion.

Oregano is packed with antioxidants including thymol, carvacrol, limonene, terpinene, ocimene, and caryophyllene which give the herb its flavour and scent, and help the body eliminate free radicals.

    • Antioxidants
    • Anti-inflammatory

    • A powerful antibacterial essential oil

Wild oregano and its essential oil are used to kill bacteria, fungi, yeast, parasites and viruses and a multitude of complaints including:

    • digestive and intestinal disorders including indigestion, heartburn, bloating, and low stomach acidity.
    • Chronic candidiasis through its antifungal properties.
    • Respiratory tract disorders such as coughs, asthma, croup, and bronchitis.
    • Regulating blood sugar.
    • Parasites, sinus pain, arthritis, rheumatism.
    • Reducing fever and the effects of mumps and measles, and so on.

Oregano oil is a powerful antibacterial essential oil. It can be used in many shapes and forms, such as tea – made from dried or fresh herbs, herbal supplements, tincture, or essential oil.

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”H2: Why is oregano oil such a powerful antibacterial” _builder_version=”4.8.2″ _module_preset=”default”]

Why is oregano oil such a powerful antibacterial essential oil?

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.8.2″ _module_preset=”default”]

Oregano contains two main compounds responsible for its antibacterial effect: carvacrol and thymol.

Carvacrol is oregano’s main active compound. This is what makes the oil effective against different types of bacteria, including Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The powerful antibacterial essential oil oregano has been the subject of increased research focus in recent years.

A 2019 study showed that Carvacrol in oregano essential oil helps prevent various strains of Staphyloccus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria from developing in meat and dairy products, suggesting that it could help control bacterial growth in foods.

Thymol is also present in oregano but is better known for working in the herb thyme. The thymol in oregano can help heal small wounds, and repels insects like ticks and mosquitos.

Medical research into non-antibiotic alternatives for the treatment of infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) microbes represents one of the top priorities in healthcare, and the antibacterial qualities of oregano are very promising in this respect.

Research from 2018 reported the effectiveness of oregano oil against a panel of MDR bacteria and demonstrated the efficacy of oregano oil for the treatment of burn infections in mice.

The healing properties of the day lily are not the first thing that strikes us about this beautiful flower.

Upon looking at a day lily it seemingly draws us in to its centre and then bursts us back out again with aplomb, with its bold curved petals and prominent floating stamen, dramatic colours and overwhelming presence.

Their perfume is distinctive and commands a presence that is unmistakable.

MS Guardio is writing a series of short articles about the healing properties some plants, flowers and foods at this time of pandemic and national crisis.

The day lily is not just a treat for our eyes and senses but also for our health and wellbeing. The use of the day lily as a herb and as a healing medicine can be traced back to east Asia and was thought to have been introduced into Europe in 1500 A.D. It comes as no surprise then that the entire flower is edible and contains more vitamin c and protein than most other vegetables we eat.

The healing properties of the day lily

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.8.2″ _module_preset=”default”]

The healing properties of the day lily are wide ranging. This stunning flower has been used by people for centuries before us and is used to many benefits today. Indeed, there is a plethora of applications. Most significantly the day lily has antioxidant and detoxifying properties. It is also strongly associated with helping with regulating heart rate therefore promoting a healthy heart. An extract of the root can be use as a blood purifier.

Used as a herbal infusion to cure insomnia, the day lily has been proven to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety and stress. In some cases, drinking this infusion can treat coughs and fevers. Drinking the fresh juice of the day lily’s bulb can help to alleviate oedema, a swelling in the body, very naturally. This can also be taken in a powder form as an alternative and should be taken with a meal.

In aromatherapy, its essential oils have been used to beneficial effect in helping people with depression. The smell promotes a feeling of happiness and tranquillity and a sense of general well-being.

As an ointment, it can be used to treat burns and scars by simply being applied directly to the skin.

Eating and cooking with the Day Lily

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.8.2″ _module_preset=”default”]

To enjoy the day lily in its simplest form is easy and a beautiful delight. Best enjoyed in the summer months pick a flower, from its stalk, that has bloomed for the whole day. You can enjoy this simple pleasure at just before dusk, when the flower is still in bloom, feel the grass beneath your feet and enjoy a delicious treat. The petals are thick and crunchy. Don’t forget the bulb at the base of the flower which has a sweet note produced by the nectar. Take the time to savour each bite and enjoy the freshness and pureness.

You can carry on the alfresco feeling by adding the flower to your favourite salads, adding a pop of extra colour to your plate. Or if you prefer, fry the buds with a little garlic, butter and a sprinkling of salt and use as a delicious alternative side dish to a summer barbeque or lunch with friends. If a stir fry is your signature dish, all you need to do is chop the flowers and throw into your wok for a delightful twist to the traditional recipe.

How to grow Day Lily’s in your own back garden or balcony

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.8.2″ _module_preset=”default”]

You may think that the day lily is a tricky customer but there is no need to worry, its easy to grow and look after. Once established, the day lily is self-sufficient and needs only a little amount of attention to gain maximum effect. There’s even more great news, Day lilies thrive in borders and containers alike so no matter whether you have a huge garden or little balcony you can enjoy these blooms.

Whilst it is important to understand that the lily likes soil that is well drained and a sunny position, it is also highly adaptable and can put up with a little shade and slightly damper ground. You can plant in Autumn or Spring, but Autumn is best if you want to produce a plethora of flowers in the summer months.

Why not take a trip to your local garden centre, they are sure to have a wide range of established plants ready to pop outside. Or if you’re feeling particularly green fingered, grab a bag of bare root, drop into a terracotta pot filled with soil and keep in a greenhouse or on a bright window sill and wait for the magic to happen!

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.8.2″ _module_preset=”default”]

It would do to take care though when using the day lily, especially its leaves, as ingesting too much is known to have an hallucinogenic effect. It is prudent to eat a small bite to ascertain if it agrees with you.

Certainly, care should also be taken when identifying the hemerkallos as newer hybrids of this day lily can be toxic if ingested. It is also wise to be aware of any allergies to the nutrients that the day lily contains and a doctor’s opinion should be sought in regard to this.

    Within the garden’s peaceful scene
    Appeared two lovely foes,
Aspiring to the rank of queen,
    The Lily and the Rose.

The Rose soon reddened into rage,
    And swelling with disdain,
Appealed to many a poet’s page
To prove her right to reign.

    The Lily’s height bespoke command,
    A fair imperial flower,
She seemed designed for Flora’s hand,
    The sceptre of her power.

Aren’t they outrageously expensive and invasive to install? In this article we explore the environmental and economic benefits of modern heat pumps and the variety of options to choose between. Installing heat pumps in care homes may feel like a novel, unchartered choice in the UK.

Understandably, with elderly relatives more vulnerable to the cold, care homes don’t want to take risks with their heating. Although in the UK 85% of homes run on legacy gas heating, in other countries, like Switzerland, 3 out of 5 new homes are installed with heat pumps. Heat Pumps are also wildly popular in Sweden, where sales have doubled over the last 14 years. These statistics should reassure residential homes about the reliability and power of heat pumps, as both these countries suffer harsher, colder winters than the UK.
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Para One Heat Pumps in care homes” _builder_version=”4.7.7″ _module_preset=”default”]

    What are heat pumps?

But first, what exactly are heat pumps? Heat pumps work like inverse fridges. They absorb cold heat energy from the ground or air and transform it into heat energy. Due to their recent emergence into the mainstream in the UK, you would be forgiven for thinking this is a new technology. In fact, the first large scale heat pump was installed in Norwich 75 years ago! This first heat pump was an humongous, ground-source machine which was constructed using winding copper coils which circulated anti-freeze.

Ground source heat pumps have come a long way since then, and technological advancements have facilitated the development of more efficient and user-friendly machines. Ground source pumps work by channelling the thermal energy deep underground. This requires extensive planning and space, as installation requires drilling a bore hole into the ground outside the property.

Ground-source pumps are a perfect choice for rural care homes with extensive grounds, but what about urban care homes with more limited space and restrictions?

Air-source heat pumps are units that can be placed besides the property, although one consideration to bear in mind is that they can be bulky and noisy. Although more convenient and cheaper to install, air-source pumps are less efficient than there ground-source relatives, and therefore have less economic benefits in the long run.

Dimplex is a major manufacturer of air-source heat pump technology and offers some useful advice about how to access their suitability for your premises, and the requirements for their installation.
    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Para Two: helps the bank balance” _builder_version=”4.7.7″ _module_preset=”default”]

How installing heat pumps in care homes helps the bank balance

Care homes typically have many rooms to heat, so it’s no surprise that heating can account for 70% of a care home’s energy bill. Heat pumps are notoriously expensive. Installing a heat pump large enough to heat a large, residential household will set you back around £20k. However, in the long run, this initial investment pays out. Due to heat pumps impressive efficiency, Dimplex estimates that their models can save you between £800-£900 a year!

It is also well worth taking advantage of the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive whilst you still can, as the scheme is due to end in Spring 2021. By taking advantage of this scheme, residential homes can generate an income of between £1000 to £2700 a year for the first 7 years.

One other economical benefit of installing heat pumps in care homes is their reliability. Traditional gas boilers can be incredibly temperamental. They require regular servicing and replacement every 10 years. Once fitted, heat pumps are a far more reliable and dependable source of heat, requiring very little maintenance over their 30 year lifespan. However, to reap the financial benefit from heat pumps, care homes need to invest in making their facilities energy-efficient. Care homes are often large and draughty, so this is no easy task.

For more information on how to make your residential home more draught-proof, consider the advice from the Energy Saving Trust.
    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Para 3: helps the planet” _builder_version=”4.7.7″ _module_preset=”default” locked=”off”]

How installing heat pumps in care homes helps the planet

Heat pumps are one of the greenest heating methods available. Not only are heat pumps emission free, but they also operate at an incredibly high efficiency (of around 400%) which means they use less electricity than standard electric heating.

Heat pumps don’t only help the planet, they are also equipped to deal with a changing climate (link to article about preparing for hotter weather). It is is estimated that in the 2019 heatwave, there were 900 excess deaths in the UK, with the majority of these fatalities being those aged over 65.

As the incidence of freak heatwaves rises, care homes need to seriously consider how they can provide thermal comfort to their residents not only in winter, but summer too. Installing heat pumps in care homes is a great solution, as they can be fitted with a reversing valve, which mean they can exchange hot air for cold air and cool instead of heat.

    [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Para 4: burns risk” _builder_version=”4.7.7″ _module_preset=”default” locked=”off”]

Why installing heat pumps in care homes is good for peace of mind.

Not only are there economic and environmental incentives to install heat pumps in care homes, but there are safety benefits too. In our article about Safety around Heaters, MS Guardio examined the risks heating poses to the elderly, including the risk of burns and monoxide poisoning (internal link to heating safety article). Heat pumps mitigate the risk posed by boilers, but did you also know they help prevent burns and scalds too?

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE), warn that hot water temperatures above 44°C pose a scald risk to care home residents when bathing or showering. They also advise care homes to be careful around hot surfaces (any surface above 43°C). For example, if a residential home fails to protect their residents from the dangers of a hot radiator, serious burns could be suffered by a vulnerable resident.

The installation of heat pumps resolves both these risks, as the water generated by heat pumps is capped at a lower temperature and heat pumps radiate an ongoing, more gentle heat than standard radiators.

As well as supplying a range of stock fluorescent light guards MS Guardio can supply bespoke guards to order such as these AIANO rose pink light guards.

Rose pink light guards for a fast food restaurant

One such instance in which MS Guardio were asked to meet a bespoke requirement was when we were contacted by a contractor working on behalf of a well known chain of Mexican fast food restaurants in Edinburgh. The customer required fluorescent light guards that were a specific shade of pink to match the décor in their restaurant.

Our guards are powder coated white as standard, however we are able to match most colour requirements for our customers. If you want to source guards in a specific colour or have a bespoke requirement contact our customer service team who will be happy to prepare a quote for you.

MS Guardio supplies AIANO Classic fluorescent light guards

Rose pink lights guards with V-ends which allow for the tubes to be changed without removing the guard
AIANO Classic fluorescent light guards are designed with V-ends to allow for the tubes to be changed without removing the guard

AIANO fluorescent light guards are the result of decades of experience in designing and manufacturing wire mesh guards. The AIANO Classic fluorescent light guard is strong, durable and aesthetically pleasing guard.

Aiano’s distinctive wire mesh fluorescent light guards with their signature v-ends are strong and attractive. The v-ends mean that the tube can often be replaced without having to remove the guard.

What our guards are made of

For this bespoke project the light guards were made with v-ends, from 1″ x 1″ x 12 gauge (25mm x 25mm x 2.64mm) steel weld mesh on a 5 gauge (5.38mm) steel rod frame. The guards were powder coated in rose pink finish (RAL3017). Our stock guards are supplied in white finish, however we can meet most bespoke requirements. We can supply guards coated in any colour and have supplied grey, silver and black in the past. However, rose pink light guards were a first.

If you have special requirements, do not hesitate to contact us for a quotation. We can make guards to all sizes and requirements. Please call us on 020 3603 4854 or email us if you would like to discuss your requirements, or require further information or advice on our wire guards.

  • Radiator Guard Options and additional health & safety features

MS Guardio offers a number of radiator guard options that are available via our bespoke service, which provide additional health & safety features or enhance the guards for particular needs and environments.

SH24 storage heater guard with support bar and lockable control flap radiator guard options bespoke sloping top storage heater guard with control flap and skirting cut-out radiator guard options

From left:  (1) SH24 storage heater guard with support bar and lockable control flap (2) bespoke storage heater guard with sloping top, control flap and skirting cut-outs.

Control flap – safe access to your heater controls

To access a control panel on the heater, it is recommended that you buy a guard with a control flap. Aiano control flaps are securely fixed to the guard on welded hinges and lie flush with the surface of guard. The flap can be secured shut with a small padlock if you want to prevent access to the controls by non-authorised persons or children.

A control access flap is much safer option than having an opening in the guard, through which children and adults may still touch the heater.

If you want a control flap on your guard, it is essential to check the size and location of the controls on your heater.

All radiator guards with control flaps on the MS Guardio website have the size and position of the control flap optimised for Dimplex heater. If your heater has controls in a different location you may need to order a special guard from us via our bespoke service

    Sloping top radiator guards

In some environments, a radiator guard can appear as a tempting seat or shelf on which to place objects – a coat, books, a cup of coffee…. This can be dangerous and can interfere with the safe functioning of the guard. Objects placed on top of the guard can interfere with the heat circulation and cause the guard to get hot.

Sloping tops radiator guards prevent people sitting on or placing objects on the guard and are particularly useful in Schools and Libraries, to avoid compromising the function of the guard and prevent damage to books.

    Skirting cut-outs

Skirting cut-outs can be made to any size to ensure the heater guard fits snugly to the wall.

    Other radiator guard options

    Welded hooks

When the radiator guard will be used in an environment where the guard must be removed for some of the time to provide access to the heater, to facilitate cleaning or for some other reason, the guard can be fitted with welded hooks instead of welded lugs. Instead of screwing the guard to the wall, the guard can be lifted on and off of screw-eyes fixed to the wall.

    Welded feet

Welded feet or legs can be added to the bottom of storage heater guards to facilitate cleaning inside the guard.

    Pipe cut-outs

Sometimes additional cut-outs are needed to allow the guard to fit over pipes and obstructions, such as sockets or valves.

    Control sticks

If you need to access the heater controls but do not wish to have a control flap, control sticks can be supplied for adjusting the controls on Dimplex storage heaters or other heaters with similar controls.

    Half inch finger-safe mesh

If you need to ensure that fingers or other objects cannot be passed through the mesh radiator guards can be made with from mesh with a smaller aperture, typically 12 x 12mm ( ½” x ½” x 16swg).

    Heavy duty radiator guards

Heavy duty radiator guards are made from a combination of steel angle bar, flat bar and 25 x 25mm 12swg weld mesh.

If you would to request, discuss or receive a quotation for any of these radiator guard options for health & safety please contact us via our bespoke services with a brief description of your requirements and someone will contact you.

Thermostatic wire mesh tubular heater guards

Wire Mesh Guards for Thermostatic Tubular Heaters

MS Guardio was the first online retailer to offer the wire mesh tubular heater guards developed by AIANO to suit Dimplex, Sunhouse, Creda and other tubular heater guards equivalent in length with thermostats.

Why wire mesh tubular heater guards? Why MS Guardio?

MS Guardio stocks and supplies AIANO STG range of wire mesh tubular heater guards, designed in partnership with Dimplex, Sunhouse, Creda and equivalent tubular heaters with thermostats.

MS Guardio stocks wire mesh tubular heater guards in singles, doubles, trebles and quads.
MS Guardio stocks every size increment of wire mesh tubular heater guards from 1ft to 6ft in length.

We keep in stock every size increment of wire mesh tubular heater guards from 1ft to 6ft in length. The guards also include doubles, trebles and quads for banks of more than one tubular heater.

The guards are the result of decades of manufacturing and design experience, benefiting from optimum heat circulation due to their open design and no sharp edges as the guards follow the contours of the tubular heaters.

The STG41 wire mesh tubular heater guard manufactured by AIANO
The STG range of wire mesh tubular heater guards has been designed to fit tubular heaters with thermostats.

MS Guardio stocks two different wire mesh tubular heater guard ranges (THG and STG) to fit exactly different makes of tubular heaters on the market.

The STG range of tubular heater guards has been developed fit Dimplex, Sunhouse, Creda and other tubular heater guards equivalent in length with thermostats.

The THG range of wire mesh tubular heater guards has been designed to fit Thermotubes and other tubular heaters equivalent in length without thermostats.

Wire mesh tubular heater guards are light but naturally strong by design. They help prevent damage to the heater and also finger-safe to reduce risk of accidental injury caused by the heater. The guards can also be installed end-to-end as needed, without compromising heat circulation.
